Martin Luther and his hatred towards Jews

Many know Martin Luther as the Religious Reformer who brought out truth about the then corrupt Vatican Church. But very few know that he hated Jews ,the only chosen people of God, the people of Promise, the people of the Patriarchs, the brethren of Jesus. But did he hate them despite learning the scriptures and having got enlightened by the truth. What made him to make comments like "we are at fault in not slaying them" in his book ON THE JEWS AND THEIR LIES. Has anyone read that book? Did he at a later point regret for writing that book? Did Nazi harvest what he had sown? I didn't believe when I learned that the man who wrote "A mighty fortress" also wrote the book On the Jews and their Lives
