I am a person with asthma. Although, in the recent years, fortunately, I haven't had a single attack yet. But season change is here again and usually if there is change, asthma attacks. So when I read this article about asthma attacks, I know I have to share it with a lot of people, especially that there are about 20million Americans who suffer from it. **** Breathing Easier (TIME magazine 10/13/08) More than 20 million Americans suffer from Asthma. And according to a recent study from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, many of them aren't doing such a good job of controlling it. That's bad news becayse asthma, a chronic inflammatory disease, can be a very serious problem, sending nearly two milion people to the emergency room each year and killing an estimated 11 people a day. The winter months, when air is paticularly dry or there is a sudden change of temperature, can cause more problems for asthma sufferers. During an asthma attack, the lining of the airways in the lungs becomes inflamed and swollen, and more mucus is produced. As air passages narrow, breathing becomes much more difficult. Other symptoms include wheezing, chest tightness, coughing and rapid breathing. To avoid such attacks and maintain lung function and health, most people with asthma take a double-whammy treatment approach, using both maintainance and rescue medication. To better control asthma attacks, experts recommend that sufferers adjust their maintainance medication and learn to better avoid their personal asthma triggers. Such triggers very from person to person and include respiratory infections or reaction to airborne irritants such as pollen, molds, animal dander, feathers, dust, or cigarette smoke.

My wife has asthma, and the way I have learned to check for an attack is that if when she speaks...or sings, I hear wheezing when she pauses for air and makes that inhaled "huuuuuuh," I know one is coming on. Or she will wake up and suddenly begin to cough. I will say, "Okay, where's the inhaler?" She is very sensitive to pollen, molds, dust, etc. So the house must be kept extraordinarily clean.
