When Good Men Do Nothing

A man once said that "All that is needed for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." When I was in high school a classmate on mine was murdered by a mob of school bullies. The murder happened at a party in they canyon in front of approximately 100 other students. A group of 4 bullies stated shoving one young man. No one said anything, They pushed him down. No one said anything. They kicked him and hit him and still no one said anything. Finally they picked up a giant stone and bashed his brains out. After the bullies left, they rushed him to the hospital, but of course it was too late. I asked a student why he did not stand up when he saw this take place, and he said he was frightened. He said if he had spoken up maybe he would be dead too. 100 witnesses and not one even tried to help. I'd like to think I would have stood up and said something, I'd like to think that others would have found their own courage and stood with me, I'd like to think that 100 students would have been able to stop 4 high school bullies, but I guess I'll never know. Would you stand up for your beliefs even if you feared the consequences?

Wow, that is incredibly horrible and sad. I really wish someone would have had the courage to do something. Maybe call for help, like the police or something, or tried to stop them from doing that. But it's stories like that that chip away at any hope I have in people. I'd like to think I would have been able to speak up or something too if I had been in that situation.

Most of the students were afraid to call the police because they were participating in under age drinking. I think someone did phone the police, but it took too long for the police cars to drive up the canyon. What was needed was someone to stand up and do something. I hope you don't loose too much faith in humanity. I'm sure there are plenty of stories of sacrifice and bravery in this world as well. Thanks for posting and happy mylotting

Oh no! That is so tragic. I really hate it when people think they have the right at all to ruin a human life and to harass someone for any reason. Live and let live! Hopefully the disgusting idiots who did it are now serving time. I'm not sure what I would do in the situation, hopefully this will never happen to any of us!

Sadly I think most of them got a light sentence because of their ages. However I think at least one of them spent sometime in prison. The thing that shocked me is how many members of the community stood beside the bullies with comments like kids will be kids, and things got out of control... yes I pray that nothing like this will ever happen to anyone's children. Thanks for posting and happy mylotting.

glords yes I would stand up for my beliefs in spite of my fears. this happened years back when I was coming home on the bus from a day at the U. two p assengers startered to quarrel, one a man about twenty years older than me, and the other about twenty five or so. Then the younger man lunged at the old man and doubled up his fist.. the bus driver never stopped, nor did anyone on that crowded bus move a muscle. I got up, I was fifty sis, and moved between the two men.I said," since nobody elseseems willing to stop this, I will. Quit trying to hit this man. He is your elder, respect him." The younger man notified me to mind my own business, that he was a bus driver as was the older man, and he cou ld do whatever he wanted. I turned to the bus driver and said, I will not let this punk hit this old man. stop the bus and call the police" well the driver did just that, and the police were there in a bout a minute. So I got hit in the ribs by the young punk, so what, if he had hit that elderly man he cou ld have killed him. the elderly man was also having some symptoms of an impending heart attack. The police arrested the younger man , and they carried the older man off and put him in an ambulance as he was having a full blown heart attack. As for myself I had a nasty black and blue bruise but would have done the same thing again. nobody, but nobody on that filled to capacity bus had done anything to intervene. I simply could not believe it.

I would stand up for everything I believe in no matter what. I hold my values close to my heart and that would never change. I mean there were 100 people there if all of them stood up and tried to help that young man could still be alive.

You know, that's one of my favorite quotes. And the whole situation sounds like a classic example of it. I heard of a similar story about a woman in a church parking lot. This was about ten years ago. She had recently been divorced, and he ex-husband was waiting for her outside of church when the services had let out. He had a knife. He chased her around her car, and eventually stabbed her. She lived. But the crazy thing was this - a madman chased this woman around her own car, stabbed her and the congregation of the church all immediately ran back into the church for safety and waited to help after the man had left instead of rushing to her aid. When police and emergency crews arrived one officer was reported as asking "There were so many of you and only one of him, why didn't anyone help her?", and he got no response. It's true, when good men do nothing, the wicked triumph. Thanks for the post glords.
