My sister along with 30 other employees got laid off almost 3 months ago. And they have denied her unemployment.NOW WE KNOW WHY!! She worked at the hospital for 7 years. Ten states operating on reserves of less than six months of unemployment benefits.Unemployment expected to rise after reaching 6.1 percent nationwide in August. Funds generated by taxes on employers based on number of employees. Economists say states need to restructure tax base to generate more funding. California, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky and Arkansas have less than six months' worth of unemployment trust fund reserves, putting the funds at high risk of insolvency. We are in Missouri.

The only choice she has it to get another job, hopefully in another state.

That may be a choice for someone who is single. She isn't.And selling a house now is near impossible. But they need the second income. She has been looking for a job. My fingers are crossed.

Do they have any spare rooms to rent out to anyone she knows like a relative? It's not fun to have to do that but it's quickly becoming the norm.

That is my humble opinion. Always it seems the rich can mess up and the burden is placed on the shoulders of the less well to do. Like when we recently saw so many people ready to retire loose everything they had. (At the moment, the name of that Scandal escapes me.. which is really irritating. I'd wager that I will remember it later. )

Wow!! This is rediculous. And to think at least as far as I thought, all companies withdraw $$ from our paychecks in case you ever need Unemployment. I would say this is another problem that no one ever seems to worry about, and uses thos against everyone as well. I think when they tend to forget about those who loose their jobs day in and day out for many reasons without making sure their is a form of help and recourse for most of them, then that is a Big problem as well.

It is wrong that she had her benefits stop so soon. We pay the tax with every paycheck and your employer has to double that amount. So it is wrong when the state stops payment in such a short time. There have been times with a lot higher unemployment rates and yet people kept their benefits for up to two years. Also when a person stops receiving state unemployment that are supposed to be able to apply for Federal unemployment. She should do this. It is usually through the social security office.

Hello ersmommy. Speaking of getting laid off, it reminds me of the years in the middle nineties when so many Chinese workers got laid off because of the plan economy being changed into market economy. During the transition of economic system, it was really so hard for the laid off because they were mostly above forty till their fifties. And they had a family to support. You could imagine how hard life was to them! But they lived through with the help of the government and many of them started to do their own business, big or small. Quite a few of them have been successful though not all of them. So there is no need to fear about so long as you are confident in yourself. I am sure that your sister will be a success with her clever mind and wonderful ability. Good luck to your sister and your family. Take care.

Okay now you have to get me started!!! This is when that 700 billion ++ bailout should come into effect to make sure that people that were laid off because of such crisis need to be covered. Maybe go back to all the thieces that stole from companies and gave themselves such big bonuses and put it all back into the system. Every little bit will help our economy right now. I wish your sister much luck with finding work unfortunately it is going to get much worse before things get better.

Im really sorry to hear that. Alot of people indeed are affected by the financial crisis, not just people in the US but also all over the world. Here in the philippines, we also experience alot of lay offs and rising prices of basic necessities. For now, why dont you help her find online income sites. At least she'll still be earning while she's job hunting.
