I am a single mom with possible multiple sclerosis,I say possible because the doctors have not diagnosed me yet but the symptoms are all there.I am very sick a lot of the time and work when I can but when I can't money gets very tight. My 16 year old daughter has a best friend they have been best friends for 7 years.I have a good relationship with her mother and step father that live down here. She has a father and a step mother that live 2 hours away I know them and my daughter has spent several weekends up there with them when her friend has a visit with her dad.
Anyway this past year the father and stepmother were taking her friend on a cruise, the friend invited my daughter to go,and told her father she wouldn't go if her friend couldn't because she felt it would be boring for her.So I was told in order for my daughter to go it would cost me 1000,00 dollars that they would put on their credit card and I could pay 100.000 a month until it was payed. All was fine I was paying it every month while I was working and then I got slammed I got so sick I couldn't walk for several days and it was weeks before I was working again.Of course my bills had piled up there was little food in my house,it was the beginning of a new school years so there were clothes to buy and school supplies. Then my car broke down so there went the job and it cost me 5 hundred to fix.I missed two months payment ,I sent them a letter telling them the mess I was in and that I would continue making payments as soon as I was back to work. These people are rich, they have no full time children just my daughters friend. They always buy her bigger and better of anything her mom buys down here. They sent me back a letter saying this was not acceptable and demanded the 300.00 I owed then immediately. When that didn't work be cause I of course did not have 300.00 to send them I got a letter to go to court and on top of that they say I now owe the 60.00 it cost them to take me to court.I really don't know what to do I want to pay them but now I am backed into a corner.I hate to drive mty car for the two hours to get to court, the gas alone will be too much for me,and my car is a piece of junk not even sure it would make.I haven't been able to afford the insurance so I would be making this journey in an illegal car.
So what would you do?

If you have that illness then you may qualify for dissabilty payments. If you go see your doctor and get it in writing. Next of all, I would ask a lawyer about that payment because I believe as long as you pay on it , dont they have to accept the payment by law?You may be eligible to draw a check and so may your daughter if you are sick and cant work. You can speak with a social security person to find out .I would call the court and let them know you arent well and have no money. Ask them or a lawyer what choices you may have. Are there any offices for assistance in your area?

Thank you for your advice.I now have disability pending I am told I will get it and perhaps then medicare or something like that will provide me with a better wheelchair then what I have now.I am most worried about the court thing,I want to pay these people I just can't right now .I don't understand why people have to be so heartless I have been so good to my daughters friend over the years. We have taken her to many outings with us I didn't ask for a dime from her mother that lives down here but she knows my circumstances and always sent money with her daughter to pay her way so I didn't have to.They have taken my daughter on outing and would n;t accept my money they always sent it back saying I shouldn't have to pay for something if they invited my daughter to go they said they did it knowing they would pay for it in the 1st place. They knew me before I got sick so I guess they understand better.
Thanks again
Jas

I'm not sure how it works where you are, but here, you can miss the court date, and all the judge will do is put the judgement in their favor and you'll have a judgement against you for $360. This will work like most any other debt, they can seize your bank account if you have one, garnish your wages if you have a job. That's about the worst of it. You won't go to jail or anything for not paying this $300.
If I were you though I would call the court. Tell them you do not have a vehicle to get there, and have no one to give you a ride. See what they think you should do.
I know rich people can be total jerks. My husband's cousin is rich and single and we're a large family who bring in not even half of what he makes. He treats us like dirt and even evicted us from a house he owned.
