Do you "invent" recipes?

I sometimes find myself imagining some recipe and would afterwards try them out in the kitchen. I would first picture in my mind ingredients, then how i would blend them or bake, or stir fry or whatever. Most of these were succesfully realized in my kitchen and i would then give them a name. Do you also invent recipes? Just now i am thinking of mashed potato with cream cheese and garlic fried in olive oil, top it with ground beef stir fried with bell peppers and onion, then top with salsa and parmesan cheese and bake it for 10 minutes. I wonder how this would turn out later. And i am also thinking there must already be a recipe like this. What do you think?

Yes I do, and unfortunately most of it were not that successful. I'm a frustrated cook, but I can barely remember the time where I had a successful home cooked meal. I hope to practice more, but I guess I was traumatized by the fact that I failed several times. There were times when my invention was of success and that really made me happy..Maybe I would try harder, when it comes to mixing and matching spices...^^Enjoy cooking

Indeed you should try some more. Never quit. If there were times you made it quite good, then that would be enough encouragement to keep on cooking and practicing. Cookbooks help a lot too. And cooking shows and great chefs are my inspirations.

I don't know how to cook but your recipe sounds good to me. I like mashed potato and thinking about it with ground beef I am salivating

You should try to learn cooking. It's a rewarding thing you know, especially when you are "salivating" thinking about some food and then you get to make one for yourself. Well, i've done my cooking and i tell you, it tastes superb! I added thyme to it and it tastes like pizza/lasagna sans the pasta. Oh btw, mashed potato isn't that hard to do.

I have had mashed potatoes with cream cheese and garlic before...so I bet if you top them with your toppings, it will be good. I don't experiment with recipies...I play it safe. I do have a sister who bakes and cooks all the time and she is always making up recipes. Somethings they are really good, somethimes really interesting and other times down right gross.

I play it safe too but in terms of inventing food the basic way. Like, i don't attempt to mix incompatible ingredients- those that i know might make the taste really bad. I've just done the one i mentioned and it's superb. I added thyme and it tastes like lasagna but you can taste potato instead of macaroni. Yum!

oh well I think you are good on kitchen. as for me I am not keen on inventing recipes and dishes but I do reinvent it, I did not start from scratch rather I take out a meal and revise its taste and more often than not the outcome is good still.

I admit i started out as a really bad cook. I apprenticed under my mother and now, my mothet in law. Eventually one becomes very good after much practice, experimentation, and yes, disasters. Improvising dishes is a good way to start. You will soon be your own kitchen chef.

I invent recipes especially if the ingredients which are in the recipes are not available and there's no substitute. Mostly I invent or else we don' t have anything to eat. I just cook what's available in the refrigerator. I don't name the invention though :) Sometimes I Invent desserts and sometimes it would not turn out nice but somebody would eat it anyway because it's not the usual dessert. :)

I do that too. It's like starting from scratch, right? And that's the interesting part of "inventing" - we get to taste something unusual.
