It was about £2 a night at a guest house with a view of Lake Toba in Sumatra in Indonesia. I got to bathe in the cool lake, fully clothed respecting the local culture. That was in 1994 so prices have probably increased.
It was about £10 a night in a fale, traditional accommodation on a tropical beach in Samoa. This included three meals a day. At night I felt a soft ocean breeze and heard the waves gently splashing at the shore. That was in 2002 and prices haven't gone up much at all.
I don't like to stay in five star hotels. I prefer to stay in locally owned guest houses and in unusual accommodation like tree houses and beach huts.
