Economy Debate Between Republicans and Democrats

Republican: The surge has been successful and turned the tables in Iraq. Democrat: We are spending billions in Iraq that we don't have. That only increases deficit spending and deepens the national debt! Republican: Hey, freedom has a price! Aren't you at least happy that the people of Iraq are now free? Democrat: The people of Iraq? What about the people in the US? What we should be doing is spending those billions here, helping Americans! Republican: So what do you suggest? Democrat: We should spend X billion on education, X billion on job creation, X billion on fighting poverty, X billion on helping Darfur, X billion on AIDS research, X billion on fetal stem cell research and X billion on alternative fuels? That's the problem here. Both sides talk a lot about fiscal responsibility, but neither have any idea what it means. They both point to the other asking, "how would we pay for that?", yet niether seem to care how we will "pay for" their own pet projects. To them, the taxpayers are just cash cows waiting to be milked. It's all "their" money, and we should just be happy with whatever amount they decide we should get to keep. Since we don't supply them with enough milk for the big cheeses, they turn to bribe...er, I mean donations from "supporters"... but still, that isn't enough, so they simply borrow money and spend, spend, spend.

This is what I know. Ex-President Bill Clinton left George Bush with a huge budget surplus that quickly turned into a budget deficit. It was five-and-a-half years into his presidency that George W. Bush ended his record stretch of spending bill-signings as he rejected legislation that would expand federal funding of human embryonic stem-cell research. A lot of people like to blame the current congress for this runaway spending, but they fail to realize that the Republicans were in charge for the first six years. Common sense tells you that you can't spend 10 to 12 billion dollars per month on the war in Iraq and at the same time cut taxes for the wealthiest of Americans and corporations. As we watched more and more good paying American jobs being outsourced overseas and more and more Americans competing with illegal aliens for low paying jobs here in America, who did the Bush Administration think would be able to support the economy here in the United States? People living day to day can't afford to buy high ticket items. Low wage earners contribute less to the coffers. So I believe the Bush Plan was wrong from the beginning of his term and we now see the results today. Trickle down economics have never worked. You have to build from the bottom up. Lloyd

What you "know" is a lie. Clinton never actually had a balanced budget. He simply considered a lot of spending "unbudgeted", and passed billions on to the states. Oh, I don't excuse the Republican controlled Congress of anything. Almost he whole time they were in charge they seemed to live in fear of the Democrats. Which is why this "debate" did pin the huge deficit and the national debt squarely on both parties. Illegal immigration? The Democrats own that problem! They have blocked every real effort to stop it. In fact, they have done nothing but encourage it! There are programs here in Wisconsin ONLY available to illegal aliens... thanks to the Democrats. "The bottom up?" That was the idea behind "The great society". When will the "war on poverty" ever start to show any kind of success? ~~~~~ It's pathetic, the post was against both parties, but all you can do is come out on the defensive for the Democrats.

That's why I'm voting for McCain. I believe him - because of his record - when he says he will cut government spending. I believe he will stop the horrible pork attached to bills. He has a record of trying to do this for years. Obama want to raise taxes on one group of people so he can give services to another. Steal from the so-called rich to give to the poor and middle class? Our country was not founded on that principal.

Ah yes... if my budget is in deficit.. I would get some stiff penalties.. guess that doesn't occur if it's spending other folk's money!

It's all about the money and it seems we move further away from morals and ethics. It's crazy how much money our government spends. As much as I hate this war and at first I was screaming pull out, But then with my husband being military I found out the rewards of helping those who do not have the same freedoms we take for granted. A part closest to my heart is how bad woman have it in these other countries. I now think differently however I still think that the war was handled all wrong and we are only now on the right track and we need to stay on that track and finish this mess up, and make sure we do not have to return. The government needs to put more control back in the hands of American people. Government just mucks everything up more. I see a lot more spending coming from the Democrat party, the way I look at it. So that is the main reason why we do not want this country completely in the hands of Democrats.

ParaTed, How true! This used to be mostly indicative of the democrats but in the past 10 years republicans have moved more left than democrats have moved right. I'm afraid it may be too late for fiscal responsibility as far as the present econoomy goes. I fear we are destined to reap the harvest of runaway spending that congress has perpetuated over the last two decades! The present problems we have today fall squarely into the laps of congress with at least some of the blame going to the president since he had to sign most spending bills(some vetos have been overridden)! And I'm not talking about just one president, this goes all the way back to the last two years of the first Bush administration when George H W let congress talk him into just "one more" tax increase and then used "read my lips" against him to get slick willie elected!
