Do you sew?

I normally do not sew very much. I learned how in high school, but have since stopped doing it. My daughter has recently started using a pillow, so I thought I would take some of the fabric that I have laying around and make her a pillow case just for her. I used some Veggie Tales fabric that I had found and never used since she likes Veggie Tales. It turned out really good and she loves it. Do you sew? What do you like to sew? Do you find sewing your own things is cheaper than buying it at the store already made?

I love to sew but it is hard to make things for less then you can buy them. I make a lot of projects from scraps of material that I have. I just made my son some new drapes for his windows at home. I make what I can when I get material for a good price and I really enjoy it. I am also going to make me a few new skirts from some material that my grandma has given me.

I do sew. Not as much as I would like, but I have 1 thing that I will continue to sew for as long as I possibly can...
My son's Halloween costumes. When I was a kid, I reveled in the fact that my mom made our costumes. We got to pick whatever we wanted, even if there wasn't a pattern for it, and we got to pick the fabrics that it was made with (within reason, of course). But if I wanted to be a princess wearing forest green instead of the traditional pink, lavender or light blue... I got exactly what I wanted. The average store-bought costume costs $30 dollars or more these days. You get lousy sewing and cheap fabric.
Well, I use inexpensive fabric for my son's costumes, but it's certainly not cheap. In the end, the costumes cost me $15-$20 for the materials. The best part? The next year, I can sell that costume on ebay or at a yard sale and make AT LEAST what I paid for my materials. I consider that a great trade off. On top of that, when we were living in Colorado it got awfully cold in October. THere was usually snow on the ground a couple of weeks before Halloween. So I could make my sons costumes out of fleece, so they'd be warm and he only had to wear some long johns or pajamas underneath instead of sweats or something like that. The thinner under layer is more comfortable for him.
For the record, he's going to be a clown this year... made with nice bright and obnoxious colors. I can't wait to get it all together and put it on him. Since the fabric is so inexpensive, and I'll have plenty of leftover notions, I think I might make a coordinating costume for me to wear with him.

I've been sewing since I was old enough to hold a needle. I don't sew as much any more because I have only myself, and I don't bother with much of a wardrobe. But I do alter clothes that I buy at the thrift stores, and sometimes make pillow cases and such from old sheets. You can save a lot of money by sewing, if you know how to buy material cheaply, and know how to recycle.

I sew, but very little..... closing small holes, re-stitching torn seams, putting buttons back on. Limit of my skills, I'm afraid.

I have a sewing machine that Carl's mom gave me. She had it when he was young. I can't really say that I am a good sewer. I have made a few rice bags on it. And a quilt or two. and some mending. I like the idea having it, in case I need it! But I really am not much of a sewer!
You can save a lot of money making some of your own things. But that is only if you can get the Material at on a very good sale. If not things at the store on sale can be a very good price!

I've been a sewer since I was 8 and in 4-H sewing club. I still love to sew and have been making all kinds of things for years. My machine isn't one of those fancy serger ones, so I mainly make shirts, draperies, sofa covers, pillows, and stuff like that. I just got done making a new cafe curtain set for the 5 large windows in my laundry/plant room. For Christmas this year one of the gifts I'm making for my grandson is train pillows with some fabric I found with all kinds of colorful trains on them. I think I save a whole lot by sewing!
