Are reality TV shows losing their appeal?

When the various reality shows first debut, they are new and interesting and fun to watch. After a few seasons (sometimes even the 2nd season!) they become boring, usual, and on-their-way-out, in my opinion. I was crazy about Survivor, Big Brother, Biggest Loser, Beauty & the Geek, etc - I wouldn't miss an episode - planned my evening around them - NOT ANYMORE! They're the same old crap now - only Supernanny and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition continue to hold my attention lately. What do you think?

I think so. Alot of them especially these VH1 shows like "Charm school" or "I love money" are just ridiculous all these people just making fools of themselves. THe only reality shows I enjoy are the ones like THe Amazing Race and Big Brother. Those 2 I enjoy. They each have a little bit of drama but it's not the whole show or what the show is about. I also like The Biggest Loser. I think those are about they only reality shows I can't stand to watch without wanting to claw my eyes out from the horrible fools that these people make of themselves.

I feel the same way. Many of them become redundant. The same shows just with a different cast. Big Brother and Survivor really havent changed at all to me...just the same crap over and over. Some of the reality shows are just ridiculous and shouldn't be on tv at all . For example Flavor of Love on VH1 with Flava Flav. He looks absolutely stupid and then of course there are the females half dressed embarrassing themselves trying to get this man when its more about being on television and having exposure. Ah i just dont understand.

OMG I HATE Flavor of Love too! Isn't it the stupidest show ever??? WTF would anybody want with him - Ewww!!! But it made me think of Rock of Love with Bret Michaels - I kinda liked it (he's kinda hot!), but then again, it's only been on 2 seasons! And I get a kick out of Run's House on MTV, but they sure did wear it out with the re-runs! Ugh!

Did they ever have any? I think reality tv is the worst idea tv ever had. I hate them. They are appalling, disastrous, horrible. An excuse to sack real actors and make us sit through crap. No way!!!!!! I do not watch them and refuse to. If one comes on while I am watching I change channels quickly. They are all night mares.

Hi dear..I agree that TV shows are really losing their appeal and they are really boring...Now a days,in reality shows every thing is scripted and they are making it like a TV serial...People are getting frustrated by watching these shows..Previously it was great fun and there used to be a lot of thrill in watching these shows, but every thing is down now...What makes them worst is,even news channels are promoting the news about these shows and they are really making a mess of it.TV channels just hire a celebrity as a host and they invite some actors to their shows and they create a hype...There is nothing more than this in todays shows. There are many sponsors and there are many TV channels to make these kind of shows...But ultimately we are suffering from these reality shows...Hope these shows get back their original fun and stuff...

Did they have appeal in the beginning? Joking. I think reality gets old pretty fast because we have so much of it. These shows bank on our voyeuristic tendencies, but most of us only have a small amount of patiences for that. We'd rather use our free time to get away from the mundanities of life, not wallow in other people's. As time goes on, the series can't be fresh anymore because people just aren't that different. We like to think of ourselves and unique and for the most part we are, in the nuance. In the generalities, we're not all the different from other people like us. After a while that gets boring watching and it would take too much time and work to show the nuance. That's why they cast those shows with stereotypes in mind. Also, there is a strange correlation between the American population's desire for escapism and our economic well-being. When things are good we don't want to escape as much, when they're bad though, we want all the escape we can get. Reality t.v. doesn't give that to us the same way fiction television does. In my opinion.

I don't think they are losing their appeal as much as they are running out of ideas. I'm a die hard fan of reality shows and find that there isn't a lot of new ideas or even competitions on Survivor, or Amazing Race or Big Brother. There are quite a few reality shows that are on cable or satellite that just make no sense to me at all. Even the newer shows that come out are copies of or pretty close to ones that we have already seen. I find it odd that with billions of people in the world, there isn't any new ideas aside from the freaky gameshows they are starting.

For me though, I really like reality shows but it does lose its appeal to me after I see the first season. Like Big Brother and Survivor. I watched the first Big Brother here in the Philippines and I watched every day and waited for occasional updates from time to time. But when it was over and the next batch came in, I just lost the drive to watch it anymore. Yeah, they're different people but I've already gotten used to the first batch I saw. As for survivor, I only watch the 2nd one. Australian outback. I wasn't able to see the first one. After watching that, I've been really tired watching the other seasons. The only that I watch from time to time is the Amazing Race. It's the places and the challenges (which often times are related to the place they're in) that I really like.

There are alot of boring reality tv shows out there. The good ones like survivor and big brother are good but there are some out there that i just flip through that are boring as hell. I nmean seriously they have no plot or game and are just lame, they simply don't deserve airtime but since that strike they just had to fill with somethin i guess.
