Do You Get Nervous When Your Supervisor Tells You "I Need To Speak To You" with a serious face? I had that feeling this morning when I was told exactly that and I was guided to our mini-conference room. Our department is processing applications for a job license and this month the number of submitted applications went down. Since I was in a contract position, I thought I must be getting the pink slip. Fortunately, I was just being asked if I would accept doing a different role within the same department that needs more people. I was also told that I have been doing well in the role I am in that I could use it in the next role I would be doing. It was a big relief. Thank God! How about you have you been in a similar position? Do you get scared when you get called by your boss?

If a person wants to talk to you, but on his list there are other things on priority, what should he do? He has to informyou that he wants to talk to you. But he may come for that after a long time. I do not find anything wrong in that.

Of course, I get nervous. It means only two things --- I committed mistakes or my jobs are well done. I am really afraid of supervisors. Last month, all of us were called and we were informed about our standing performance from January to September. My perfomance was really improving but still I haven't reach our quota. She didn't get mad at me. I Most of us is too far from the quota. Anyway, if our supervisor will call me again, I will just keep on telling myself that she called because I did a good job. I am optimistic now.

Hi Muelitz... I guess you had a good day... Haha. Well. Honestly, I don't get nervous when my supervisor tells me that she needs to speak with me. My co-trainers and I would probably think the same thing... We would all be thinking and groaning "What is it now?" LOL. The only time our supervisor talks to us would be if the management wants us to do something new and impossible.

That is the spirit, I like it. If you are always afraid of your boss, how should you do good work?

Hi there. Of course, I'd get nervous if any one of my bosses comes to me with a serious face and tells me he/she wants to speak with him or her. Heck, some of my bosses (especially our managers) make me nervous just being in the same room/cubicle with them. I don't mind it so much when I'm with my direct supervisors/in-charges but when a manager approaches me (which is a feat, in and of itself) and asks to speak with me, then I get nervous and scared. I guess it's a normal thing us ordinary workers experience regardless of whether your boss is normally friendly and accommodating or not.

Nope, because if you did not do anything wrong I dont see any reason for you to get nervous. Maybe just wonder what he is going to tell me because of his serious face.

Exactly so. This is the right attitude. Otherwise, an effective communication cannot happen. As a result the organization will suffer.

Yes, muelitz. I get nervous with cold hands when our superior calls me up and needed to speak to me. He's a strict one and I'm afraid that he will scold me. But, luckily, the scolding never happened yet. So, I try to follow all his instructions and reminders so that I'll be saved from it. Good day!

Hi there Muelitz! There are instances when I hate it when my immediate supervisor tells me that. But in most cases, I feel very confident to talk to my immediate supervisor. I carry out my responsibilities without violating any rules and regulations. That is why when I am called by my boss, I do not find any reasons to be scared. There are times when I am blamed for something I did not do but I always get to prove them wrong. They try to look for anything that would put me in hot waters but they can't do that as long as I know I am not doing anything wrong.

Yeah, especially when I just started working. A serious face without emotions usually gets me off guard and I tend to be really nervous when my boss calls me up. But of course, it's not all that bad. Most of the time it's good and very constructive. As time passed by though, I tend not to be affected by it anymore. I just go up and go to him/her and talk about what she wanted to speak to me with. I do get scared when it's from higher management like department managers and directors who'd want to talk to me.

No I don't unless I know that I have done something wrong. My boss would call me in for meetings sometimes and often I knew what the problem was before so I would be prepared. Usually it meant someone had complained to her to try and get her to force me to do something that I said I could not do. It always worked out in the end.

I don't get nervous. Everyday my boss call me, " I need to speak to you, please come in my office." It is to talk about job and also about life or others. I think this is a good relationship. If my boss don't call me, I think she is forgetting me, and also may not need me.

Unfortunately, I had worked in a place where the manager has always have a serious facial expressions, I have never seen her smile. One day, she called me to her office, I paused for awhile thinking what have I done wrong, but I wasn't nervous at all. She locked the door, and started asking me. How did you find your performance? I answered as far as I am concerned I am doing well. And she said straight away, I heard a lot of feedbacks about your performance and I think you don't fit in this kind of work or company. I was shocked and surprised about this feedback because I think its not genuine. To cut the story short, she only heard that feedback from one staff, so I told her next time if you want to get feedbacks make sure that you ask everybody before you believe from it.But atleast I am aware now, thanks anyway! And she was blushing!

Well I have been working hard to do really well at my job so I just hope when my boss does that it will be good news these days. With the way the economy is, I just want to do a good job to keep a roof over my head!

All the time! I assume that I've done something wrong, as people don't normally speak to me in that way unless I have actually done something wrong. And when I think I just MIGHT be praised for something, it turns out that I've done something else wrong! So you know, I guess I just get nervous because it usually means I'm going to get punished!

I'm glad you didn't get 'the pink slip' and another role in fact. As I haven't started to work yet, I can't perhaps really respond in that way. But I remember one time when our class had a history test, the Industrial Revolution, which we were about to get and my history teacher asked me to stay because she needed to speak with me. I had to wait until all my classmates had left the class room, and I was pretty shaky as I thought she had suspected me for cheating on the test (which I hadn't). But she brought some good news. That I had responded with the most crystal clearest answers she's seen and that I should keep it up that way. It was a huge relief. Greetings, Stardust.

I don't get nervous about talking to supervisors. I used to but I think I've just become a bit too jaded. There is only a slight chance that I'll be fired. I mean, where I am working I have talked to "the man" many times and have yet to be fired. Aside from being fired there is very little they can do or say to affect my life. So, all is good. Usually when I have to speak to the boss it is merely for informational purposes anyway.

oooooooohh yes. My supervisor is notorious for making you feel uneasy. She is such a sweetheart, but it irritates me because you never know what she is thinking. I work with all women and one man. Working with all women, there will always be some type of gossip and mess and you try hard to steer clear of it. But sometimes, I get drawn in. There was one incident when some crap went down about someone getting a higher position. Now, everyone was just dogging her out, but I knew they were jealous. When the girl found out what people was saying, she was pissed. But, I went up to her and told her I was happy for her and congrats, which made her feel better. Now a week later, my supervisor said " I Need To Speak To You." I thought I had did something wrong, but all she told me was "thank you" for not getting caught up in the office drama at that time. I think we kind of overreact in the moment because he/she is basically our superior and can dictate if we will recieve another paycheck.
