dogs don't eat grass because their stomachs are upset...but that's almost right. Dogs eat gras because it helps them digest their food and whatever else they eat lol. Grass is good for their digestive systems lol. :)

My dogs like grass, too. There are times when our terrier was sick, he liked rolling on grasses and eat them. I have read this, and I hope this could help: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?articleid=1139 Have a nice day!

I always heard they will do that if it's going to rain.. but then, that would mean it was going to rain everyday! So I see that may be a myth!

I am a Vet by profession. Like believed by many it is true to some extent that when dog feels digestive upset it tends to eat some fibrous material to vomit out the content of stomach becuse of the irritation caused by this fibrous material like grass ! But basically why dogs have the tendency of eating grass? This is a inherent charecter possessed by them. What I mean there by is, in nature dogs, foxes and wolves arescavengers ! That is they eat the left overs by the strong carnivores like Tigers and Lions. After having their fill the tigers and lions leave the carcuss to these scavengers. As it is known Lions share is always a quality one that is , the big carnivores they consume muscles and other delicate organs which are tasty and does have more nutitious value leaving the offals tht is internal organs like intestines etc for the cavengers. So these scavengers which include dogs in nature eat digestive organs and together with these organs they alsoeat the contents in the digestive tract which is mainly grass, as the herbivores (grass eating animals) are generally hunted by the big cats. So the dogs have the habit of having grass in their diet naturally. With the passing of time though the dogs have got domesticated by Human being this habit of theirs is still persisting and this habit may take few more Hundred of years or more to come to an end as an evolutionary adaptation because of domestication! But today the dog does have this natural instinct and that makes the Dog to eat grass involuntarily! Thansk ! Nice topic of discusion enjoyed participating in it!

i'm not really sure... they are a bunch of reasons why they do it.. my dad doesn't eat grass but he loves these one kind of weeds? i think. i don't it but it is weird and he eats them every time we walk by some and ive never seen any other dogs eat them. so i think he is just a werido lol they don't seem to hurt him either so i don't think its anything to worry about... your dog might just enjoy the taste of grass because yea, i don't she is having an upset tummy every day in less you have just recently changed her food or something. it is probably nothing... a lot of dogs do it and its not harmful to them so that is a good thing.

actually here in the Philippines it is widely believed that the reason why dogs eat grass is because they are sick and they are treating themselves. at first i found that hard to believe but now that I've seen one poster post a link so i guess it must be true that dogs will try to heal themselves.

When I was young and I saw for the first time, one of my pet dogs eating grass, it got me all worried. I still remember yelling 'Mummy, Daddy, Juliet is eating grass. She'll fall sick'. (Juliet was the name of our german shepherd). Then my Dad explained that this would help her digest her food and that it is quite natural for them, and many other animals to eat grass. I have four pet dogs now. Three of them eat when feel like occasionally, and clear their tummy, but one of them like to eat it every time she gets the chance. They love normal grass, bamboo grass, lime grass, pink grass. They all grow in our backyard, so good for them...

My dogs like all sorts of green things. You can give them a tin of green beans - this will curb their appetite with no calories. My little chi just loves green peas. - No butter or salt of course. The frozen ones are best (thawed). It is kind of like fiber - animals in the wild eat grasses too. Brocholi gives them gas - so don't give them that. Spinach chopped up is good too. Our dogs don't really eat grass but they get other green things - which may satisfy their 'fiber' need. We have our dogs on a whole bone meat diet (even the chi). They love it!No chemicals in our dog food. None of the dogs have had fleas for the last two years and their teeth are absolutely white with no tartar. Our chi is a long hair pure white girl - and she does not have those brown stains around her eyes so common in white dogs!

bunny, Hey Sweetie, be careful with your little one eating grass. I think that is how my little dachshund was poisoned. The neighbor poured some kind of weed killer around his house and around an electrical box to keep from having to use the weed eater and my little Bogie ate some of the poisoned grass. People are just too careless with insecticides and other chemicals. Even walking your dog can be dangerous if they come across a neighbors yard that has been sprayed. These are things we just don't think about all the time. What kind of little dog do you have? I really miss mine and hope to get another puppy soon. leenie

I don't think all dogs eat grass because they have an upset stomach, because some dogs vomit the grass up. I just think it is a common behavior and they like the taste of it. The same as cats.

My dog used to do that whenever i would walk him too. I am not sure the reason but i dont think it has anything to do with their stomach. Maybe they just like it. I have seen lots of dogs doing this.

Hi bunnybon7, I have never heard of dogs eating grass, but I know cats do when they are not feeling too good or when they have a cold. You can ring up the vet and ask. Tamara

its natural instinct. i found a website, but it wont let me paste the whole link, but its www.petlibrary.co.uk. just go there and type why do dogs eat grass. according to that article, it says its because the grass is there and they want somthin done about it, so instinctivley, they eat it... hehe
