The nerd was elected king..........

My son just came in from his High school homecoming game. They announced the King and Queen at the end of the game. All week long the kids have been wondering who it would be. The usual popular (aren't they usually self-appointed? so why are they called popular?) kids were in the running. But one kid stood out. He is in the band, very quiet (but well thought of) and definitely not in the "in crowd". Everyone that my son is friends with has been rooting for this kid! I think it was just great! The popular kids were overheard saying "We can't let him win it! It will ruin everything!" Guess what? The nerdy kid WON! the crowd was screaming and the popular kids were just in shock. His mother was so excited and the kid was just grinning from ear to ear. I think he represents the average Joe. He will probably be much more emotionally touched by this than any popular kid would be. This was a win for the "little guys"! What do you think of this? Have you ever experienced anything like this?

At my senior prom, I don't think the votes were even counted for the king and queen. Why? Well, the prom king was not a popular guy, he was the senior class president. He got that position (class president) not out of popularity, but because everyone thought that a nerd was the best person to elect -- more likely to actually DO something. The prom queen was the head of the prom commitee. A random, casual, polling of attendees that some friends and I made revealed that the most popular couple actually received the most votes. While the prom and/or homecoming court elections are a little irritating, because of the whole "let's let the popular kids glorify themselves" thing that surrounds it... if you're going to have an ELECTION, make it an ELECTION. Whoever gets the most votes wins. Not "you guys waste your time and vote... we've already chosen for you." I think it's awesome that it wasn't the most popular kid who won the homecoming king. Since there were people rooting for the kid, I'd bet that he was actually elected, and that says a lot about the kids in that schools disregard for the superficial.

Yup. It was a real election. I find the whole thing to be so hopeful to every kid there. Our town is going thru some really rough financial times and people are moving away. This was just the type of thing to give us all a little hope. Ok, I think I need a tissue now.

That was great! For me i always saw the popular one winning and felt bad cause i hardly rooted for them so I was always disheartened when the person I choosed didn't win simply because they were simple and didn't think they were heroes...I use to feel like a defeated politicians then Its great that the boy won! have a nice day!

oh how wonderful for him!! he must have been so excited! and i can just imagine the beaming pride that his mother had full to the brim! shoot, i was reading it and the grin just got bigger lol! i wasnt a popular kid, though i wasnt an outcast either. i was basically a bookworm lol! i always had my nose stuck in a book and frequently depended on whomever i was walking with to keep me from running into things!! that is so great! he will definatly remember the whole experience, and like you said, it probably meant sooo much more to him than if the popular kid had won and just been "confirmed" in how great and popular he is lmao! awesome!

I think that is great! I was never in the "in" crowd myself. Hopefully it will be a good lesson for the popular kids that they shouldn't think so highly of themselves, but I doubt it.

I think you are right. And I believe they are really ticked off right now! I forgot to mention that the band director was jumping up and down with excitement for this kid too.

Oh your post reminded me of my school days! The excitement brought about by that King and Queen..so and so... Ha!ha!ha! It brings back so many memories but those are so manny and it would take so long to post here. It's enough that you've given me a wide smile with this topic because it reminded me of my younger days way back. Ahhh...those were the days... the King is now my hubby and the Queen is now her wife! Well, that nerd kid must have won the admiration of many because of his distinctive personality. Even if I were to vote I will choose the nerd one over the popular. I've always been for the underdog! I don't like the popular one who tends to be boastful! Good for him...he lost over a nerdy kid! Ha!ha!ha!

There was no election of Homecoming King or Queen in my high school - they simply announced them at the game. I have no idea how they were chosen, but they knew in advance because they were dressed for the part. No banners, no signs, nothing. To this day, 35 years after graduation, I still don't know how they chose any of them. Our class president was chosen at the beginning of high school and stayed the president all four years. He was a football player and he did literally NOTHING for us. He didn't show up to meetings, pep rallies, or any other student event. He didn't organize any fund raisers and when we graduated, there was virtually nothing in our class account. He was just chosen because he was popular and a football player.

My son was so excited because he thinks this kid is really a sweet, quiet, kid. When they called the boy out onto the football field, he wore his band uniform. I have to think that this is the first time that anyone in the "court" was from the pep band. He could have gone out there in a suit, but he chose the uniform because he said "the football players (on the "court") are all in their uniforms, I want to wear mine too". It's great that he's proud to be a "band nerd"!

Hi there rocketj1 This is great and it will do wonders for the kids self esteme and confidence, brilliant stuff. I can't say that I have had first hand experience of such a situation but now maybe the nerdy kid will become a popular kid and I hope it doesn't go to his head!

I think it is super! What a refreshing change. I was one of the type that I floated between groups in highschool I pretty much got along with everybody.

hi rocketj1 I think thats just great, about time an average joe 'kid who was considered a nerd got the big prize, usually its the most popular kid , the football hero who always gets awarded homecoming King. No sadly when I was in high school it was the same old thing the most popular football star was the king and the queen was the sexiest most popular girl, nobody ever thought of picking a nerd, heavens no. Wish it had happened though.

I think the kids this year were just tired of the "in-crowd" deciding what was cool. They decided for themselves! Thanks:)

I think that's FANTASTIC!! The "little guys" stood strong and didn't let the self-important few take the day and assume what they felt was an entitlement!! Halleluyah!! I hope that's a trend that goes nationwide!!! It's long past overdue. Congratulations to that young man!

Totally against! Now, before you all get jumpy for my opinion, let me explain. In life and society there is a natural order for things, when we push this order to the limits, the results are disastrous, I actually feel sorry for the kid since he will be shunned more than before, and besides, he's going to be in the watch from everyone, quite people are usually like that because they don't want to be seen by anyone, they do just fine, confined to themselves, that's the way they are, that's the way nature intended for them to be. Too much pressure makes people and things break, not only does he know have to represent an image, but also fight all the people against it. The way I see it, it will just be taken as a mishap, rather than a historical event in this school.

Oh no, he was never shunned before. He was always well liked, just quiet. The kids in school are just voicing the opinion that the "popular" kids are really only popular with themselves. They (the popular ones) have elected themselves as such. They belong to an exclusive club that only those with money and looks or athletic ability can belong to. It is a small, self-centered group for the most part. The "regular" kids make up the majority of the school. I believe that this is very American and democratic. The majority has ruled. They have shaken the establishment and I believe none of these kids are going to let this one Nerd down. They liked him before and they like him now. He is the representative for them for the Good ,overlooked kids who are humble, hard-working, and above all KIND! Something that the ruthless popular kids don't understand. There are even some of the popular kids who welcome this. There are some who are truly kind people who have no problem with sharing the spotlight. And the pressure for this kid is pretty much ZIP! The position of Homecoming King is truly only a one night event (other than crowning next year's winner) No job involved other than riding in a parade. Lucky kid with the beautiful Queen on his arm!

Not really following your point. If you are saying this makes him popular now, then maybe your definition of high school popular and mine are completely different. The popular crowd in most high schools are the "in crowd" the ones who are the elite. They set the trend for what is considered cool. Or so they say. Occasionally you will have a popular kid who is actually well liked. For the most part they are a group that has set themselves apart and said you can't have these certain things because they belong to us. You can be very good looking but still not be in the in-crowd. It is really a nebulous thing. THEY make the rules. The kids were tired of the In-crowd telling them who should control this King thing. They are looking for some hope that these ridiculous rules that the in-crowd has set for being a person of any significance can be thrown out the window. Will they change the in-crowd and their mentality? Probably not but this is one contest the in-crowd cannot have this year. Hoo-ray for the little guys!

All I'm saying is that it really contradicts itself, because if the kid is loved by everyone, then it really makes him popular, so in reality he is a popular person. The point is not about he being "nerdy", because it's really irrelevant, now lets say, without offending, he's "ugly", then we would have something, or he's "EMO", then we're talking, it's really about me thinking that it's either 2 things, or not a big deal, or simply something that's un-natural. thank you.

ALthough I am glad what happened happened... I have never thought a King and Queen thing for homecomming o any other event, was "right" I mean usually it is just the most popular kids, or the prettiest or most hunky and stuff like that. Just cause she isn't as pretty, doesn't mean that plain jane girl doesn't deserve to be Queen, but you know she never will be. I think it is just to "bollywood". Means nothing.. at least just my opinion. THings might have changed since I was in high school - but I look at it back then adn it was just such a joke.

That is a wonderful story! I'm so happy all the kids were able to come together that way!! I think this is very encouraging, not just that he won, but also that obviously the school body was able to come together on this topic in enough numbers to tip the balance! Where did you get your avatar? I love it! Can I borrow it?

Lol.. The popular guys if they won would be super cocky about it.. as in it's like natural if they had won the title. But any nerdy guys who won would have been appreciative of the fact that they are the winner. That's the difference in the attitudes of nerdy guys and the so called popular ones. Lol. It must have deflated their egos a little bit to have lost the competition to a nerdy guy and at the same time, they must have felt very embarrassed. A hard lesson for them! But no sympathy for them here! Anyway, congratulations to the guy who had won! It just goes to show that even if you think that you are popular, it does not means that you are well liked. Guess there is a difference between people who gained respect and are well liked because of their own selves, and those who are feared just because they are a clique of the 'in' crowd. Oh well~ An empty vessal makes the most news. Seems like the popular ones are not really that popular afterall, and the quiet one is in fact the popular one. What a twist of fate! Well, I have not been in that situation nor have I encountered such situations before. Just want to put in my two cents worth about the irony of the entire situation. Hehe.. happy mylotting!! And I am glad that an underdog had won! Take care!

That is awesome. That happened in my school once, too. I think it's funny that the popular kids usually win when people really don't like them deep down inside.
