Recently, one of my brother’s puppies passed away. My brother took it out to my Mom’s farmhouse and it joined numerous other pets that have been laid to rest including my beloved Petey. He asked me to call Animal Control and see if they had a specific way you were supposed to handle pets that had died. They said he could bury it at his home…if he owns it, contact the vet who will freeze it until it can be picked up and incinerated, contact the animal shelter that incinerates it on the spot or he can find a family in the country that will let him bury it on their land. Since our Mom has a home outside of town that seemed like the best thing.
I have buried not only my Petey, but various cats, hamsters, birds, fish and even a lizard. I just couldn’t toss them in the trash or send them off to become ashes. I always wrap them in a towel and say a prayer over them. With Petey, I go out each year and put flowers on his spot and I talk to him whenever I go out there. Even my Nephew says hi to him when he goes.
How do you handle it when a pet dies? Do you have a special burying spot? Do you go all out with a marker and that? Any special ceremonies you do.

I like to bury my pets. In a towel, just like you. It is horrible, and heartbreaking to dig that hole, place your beloved friend in then start shovelling dirt over it but it is nice to have a spot you can come to where you can sit and think and pay your respects to your pet. In my backyard I have a couple of rats and a couple of guinea pigs. I'm sure my baby dogs will go there too when they pass away (hopefully not for another 10 years yet!)

In the past we have buried them. But with my beloved Reggie my son took him in to have him put to sleep because he was in so much pain from cancer...my son was crying so hard he couldn't stop at the desk so they disposed of him for us. I would have rather had him and buried him in our back yard....

Hi twoey, Although I had two cats when I was growing up, there were quiet a few years that I was not able to have a pet. Thirteen years ago I was finally able to get another cat, he was just a kitten when I got him and I named him Rusty. Last April he took sick and the Vet confirmed that he was suffering a lot and couldn't live very long. We had him put down and cremated. The memorial I have of him is a large framed picture that hangs in the hallway. It is a very difficult time when we lose a pet and it's good to have some kind of Memorial. I think that your choice is a very good one and now you can visit your beloved Petey. Blessings.

Hi twoey-fortunatley I haven't had any of my pets die at the moment but obviously one day it will be my dogs..at the moment I am not sure what will happen but would want them to be close to me eg maybe their ashes in an urn so I can keep them in remembrance of them and perhaps find somewhere special I could put them so I too could give them flowers now and then...littleowl
