Do you bake your own Christmas cake?

The other day I was in the supermarket and thought that I really ought to give it some thought as to if I am going to make my own Christmas cake this year as it is already October and it needs time to mature. I remember my mum cooking the Christmas cake every year letting myself and my brothers have a stir and make a wish before she put it in the tin to bake. On weighing up the advantages and disadvantages I have decided not to make it this year as the ingredients are expensive and this year for Christmas there will only be me and my 3 boys. We don't eat alot of fruit cake and feel that it would be a waste until their tastes mature a bit too and we have more people coming for Christmas. So how about you? When do you start to make your Christmas cake? Do you think that it is a waste of time and money and simpley buy one?

I have never made a fruit cake. Actually, I don't think I have ever eaten fruit cake either. I do make sweet treats and desserts around the holidays, but a fruit cake is not one of them.

I am afraid to say Humbug that if I decide we ought to have a christmas cake then its off to the supermarket for me!they have some really pretty cakes, and the prices are reasonable too, when you take into consideration that the cake is laden woth fruit, eggs, sugar, icing and all the rich things in life, then the price is not too bad.I have seen them in Lidls recently, they fully iced cakes were around six pounds, which was good value, but lol they have sols out already!there was an older man who stopped to have a few words with me today whilst I was in Lidls and he told me that Tesco`s were `rob dogs` lol.and that they could sell their produce at a much cheaper price than they do,anf he wouldnt give them his money under any circumstances !!but I have to admit, that to my mind there is nothing really to equal a Marks and Spencers christmas cake, they are scrummy, moist and full of fruit, they maybe are a few pennies dearer but well worth it.In fact my daughter made her own wedding cake using iced ready made fruit cakes from M and S and the cake looked beautiful and tasted wonderful!!

Hi ya ruby222 Well it is really funny you should say that but that is exacly what I have done! Bought a cake from Lidl hahaha. I actually opted for the one that was only iced on the top as the likelyhood of it being consumed by next summer would be higher. I think they are lovely when they are iced all over but it is just too much to digest!! Thanks for responding!!

I know a lot of people make fruit cake for Christmas. I do not like it though and most of my family doesn't either. We do try to make some type of cake or pie for our Christmas get together though. With my family I'm usually the one to make a pie or cake because that is what I offer to make...that and some kind of veggie or casserole and then I make tea to drink. With my husband's family his grandmother always makes the cake. She usually has about 3 different kinds.

We dont usually have christmas cake because there are alot of other things to eat at that time. I only tried making a fruitcake one time. It is alot of work and the ingredietns are expensive. I gave it to my inlaws and they either stuck it in the freezer or threw it out. It wasnt worth the effort. I like candy and Christmas cookies more than cake at Christmas time.

Hi there snowy22315 I think with me it is like I must have a Christmas cake because we have always had one and Christmas wouldn't be the same without one. We always have plenty to eat too but there just always has to be Christmas cake floating about somewhere. Thanks for your response

I hate to bake. I think if I had a timer it wouldn't be so bad but I start something and then walk away to do something else and forget about what I started before. So baking doesn't turn out too well. I have bad luck with timers also. I have used 2 and both just stopped working and they were brand new. I took it as a sign. Someone doesn't want me to bake lol. For birthday's and stuff I just buy my cake from walmart. I like the whipped icing and they are pretty cheap.

My mam always buys a Christmas cake. I think, like me, she likes the thought of being able to make a homemade one but not the amount of time and preparation it takes to do it. Im not sure about the cost of the ingredients but I know a lot goes into a Christmas cake so I would not be surprisd if it turns out to be very expensive. Personally I am not a big fan of Chsristmas cake. I will eat some but if I prefer sponge cake.

Hi ya donna22 It's the rum, quantity of fruit and nuts and marzipan that I think are the expensive inredients. I too am not a big fan of fruit cake but will eat a bit at Christmas because it is tradition! Thanks for your response

I'm not very good at baking. I have a hard time sticking to one recipe only because I easily get bored. So I try to play up the recipe by adding other ingredients like chocolate bits and nuts, but it interferes with how the cake or cookies turn out. :( I think I'll just save on time by ordering from the professional bakers. it's not that expensive anyway, I think. :)

Hi ya mimico That is great that you improvise but sometimes to do justice to your baking you may need to keep to the recipe!! . It is definately cheaper to buy a Christmas cake that is for sure! Thanks for your response

Hi, I like the idea of making your own christmas cake. I have never made one before, My mother used to love that cake and I always bought one for her. My mother in law also enjoys this cake but has stoped eating it because she has become diabetic and that's out of the limits. Myself, the European Yule Log is my favorite and yes I always make this for christmas eve. I have fun coloring the coconut for grass, making the mushrooms from meringue, flowers from sugar paste. Some Christmas I have given those as gifts for the family.

Hello AbbeyB I think you are right that there is something special about making one and maybe I will surprise my mum by making one and then she can take the one I bought up to my Nan's so they can have that there. How soon should I start making it AbbeyB? Got any beginers recipes that I could use as you are the pro? Thanks for your response

I use to bake fruit cake and sell it during the holidays. But now that I m quite busy and yes ingredients are expensive, i buy our christmas cake. SInce we seldom buy cakes, might as well buy it and enjoy it with your family. I miss my baking of those cakes but its different now and i have different chores and work and baking them will be time consuming, too. Maybe next time.

My family has never cared for fruitcakes, so we never had that tradition. What I do make, is a platter of assorted holiday cookies. Peanutbutter dipped in milk chocolate, two-toned peppermint twists, cutout cookes, frosted ones, and of course snickerdoodles. I make them in advance, keeping them in zipper bags, and assemble the platter on Christmas day. One year I made pies instead, and everyone missed the cookies, so now I stick to them.

i'd love to make a christmas cake. i want to learn how to bake a cake. nobody in my house likes to bake so nobody taught me, but then we had this class in high school on food chemistry where we cook stuff a lot of the time and our activity on making apple pies just captured my fancy! i suppose fruit cakes should be done really early, like june or so. anyway, it will be really special if you make a cake for next year. i would appreciate it, if i were your kid. =o

Hello solris765 No you don't start making the cake back in June but I guess you could if you really wanted too provided you don't live somewhere too hot. I think my mum used to start hers at the end of October/begining of November. You have to start with soaking the fruit in rum first for a few days or a week I think. I am not sure I will have to get my mum's recipe off her to carry on the tradition.

i indeed want to. but i dont have a oven , many times i have thought to buy one , but just thought about it cause i am not always at home . so i always search some cookbooks about dessert that dont need a oven on internet, then i use a micro-wave oven and a pan to make what i like .
