Well, It won't make backups for everything. It do backup for system registry, as far as I know. But when I was getting problem (like NTDLR missing or some file was deleted by unknown action which was mandatory to run system properly), It was not helping me anymore. But If you face any problem with any installatoin, It was useful.

"System Restore" is one of the brilliant feature in windows XP and newer version of OS. This is most efficiently used when you know what your doing. I have set a restore point using system restore where I have all my applications installed and running fine. Whenever My system creates a problem for any reason I just use this point to restore my computer and all's working fine and good. Only thing to remember here is that don't keep any of your required files on the desktop or any where in documents and settings, program files, windows folders before restoring your computer using System Restore. Happy Mylotting!

System Restore has always been helpful especially if software installation failed. Just be sure that you setup a date for the restore point. An alternative for this is using Last Known Good Configuration. While computer is rebooting just tap the F8 button until you get a list then choose Last Known Good Configuration. This is useful in case your OS doesn't boot up at all
