when someone compliments you just for helping....

Just recently, I took care of my mother in law for about a month after she fell and broke her hip. I am blessed to be able to work from home so I would be the likely candidate. I prepared her meals, served them, helped her dress and do other personal things that she just couldn't do. It wasn't a big deal and like I said, I am blessed and should share the blessings when I can. I really hate it when someone tells me that I'm so nice or so good for helping someone. That's what we are supposed to do, help one another and I don't think a compliment is warranted. How do you react when someone compliments you for doing good?

Hey redkathy! I know how you feel. I am the same way when someone tries to compliment me for doing something that I feel comes naturally for me. I don't like to be complimented it makes me feel very uncomfortable. I don't know how to react. I do things for people because I want to not for the compliments or the thanks. I have helped take care of neighbors and never asked for anything in return. I just feel that if I can help someone who needs help then why shouldn't I. I know that when I broke my shoulder and I needed help how horrible it was for me to depend on other people and it was hard to get people to help me and I felt very badly that I had to ask for help. It made be feel sick to need people to help me simple things like go shopping with me or for me. I will never forget that feeling. So if I can do something for someone to prevent them from ever feeling that way I would in a minute.

EXACTLY!!! I was in a bad motorcycle accident when I was in my twenties. I could not do anything for myself. In fact I'm lucky to be alive. It was more than horrible and I had help without asking! No compliments are necessary for anything I do for anyone else.

You know, appreciation is nice but it doesn't really matter if it is appreciated. For me it's about what I can do for someone else, about sharing some love!

You do deserve the compliment. You don't HAVE to help your mother, and many people wouldn't. Many people would hire someone if they could, or fight with their siblings to get someone else to do it, or at least share the burden. Most people just can't be bothered anymore, even if it is family. So your actions truly are remarkable. Just smile and say thank you.
