I bought some sliced ham for sandwiches the other day from the local deli at a grocery store where I shop often to find when I got home and my husband opened the package that the meat smelled really funny--like on the verge of being spoiled. He asked me to smell it thinking that his smell was off with a sinus infection, but it had a smell to it. It wasn't like it was already bad but well on its way. He said he couldn't eat anything that smelled like that and I agreed. I took the meat back for a refund.
Have you ever bought something from your local deli that was spoiled? And if so, did you take it back or just throw it in the trash and forget about it? These days, we are watching our budget, so I decided to take it back. They need to pull it from the shelf, but I'm not real confident that they did this since a young teenager was working customer service when I returned the meat.

That hasn't happened to me. Thank goodness, I would be upset. But it has happened to my mom. And she just heads back to the deli and gets more. Or she has gotten her money back. I guess you cannot be too careful.

We have bought food from the grocery store that was spoiled and we called first, to make sure they had a manager there, and then brought it right back for a refund or exchange. I found that usually the store will exchange it but whether or not they will check the rest, I doubt it. For example when we brought back milk, we usually dealt with an adult and they let us check out the new milk before we bought it... however they did not seem concerned about checking the rest of the milk. i think they chalk it up to a one time deal, like 1 container was spoiled.

I went to Wright's IGA several years ago to get groceries for my parents. In the deli section I bought some hamburger meat, and I assumed it was fine. When I got home and opened it, it looked different than it did just sitting in the meat counter. The date said it had a few days from expiration, but it was definitely spoiled. I took it back, and was quite annoyed they would put something like that out there, without paying careful attention to their product.

Yes i have, and that is horrible..I have bought meat(like lunch meat) from the deli where they slice it off for you and put it in bags, only to bring it home & it was spoiled. They are supposs to change out that meat often and sometimes they don't.I have also bought the meat and brought it homme ,only to have it spoil with 2 -3 days and that should last longer than 2-3 days.I have now gotten to the point of asking how old is that meat because i have gotten bad meat before...I think for the price we have to pay ,it should last at least a little while...

This sort of thing has not happened to me... but if it does... i would surely go back and return the item... with the current economic situation... we cannot afford to lose money just because of some irresponsible people...
In the past... i would even return a food item... like a burger with hair... or incomplete food item...

I bought a bad chicken one time. I knew it the minute I opened up the package it was sealed it. Boy did it about kill me with the smell. I took it back to the store. The butcher asked me how I knew it was rotten. I said "Smell it it is rotten"

Was it the kind that they had to cut for you? IF so they should have smelled it when they were slicing it and not sold it to you. If it was already sliced and in packages then was the date packaged and good till past due or did you not look to see? I have purchased deli meat before that has gone bad in a day or two after I bought it, and I have returned it.
I always buy lots of lunch meat when I buy it because there are two of us that take sandwiches to work so I get enough to last a few days. I have had it go bad in those couple days and if I only have a little left I will just chuck it, but if there is still a fair amount left I will return it. By then I have already eaten some so they just give me fresh stuff, the same amount that I bring back, not the amount I bought as we already ate some.
It doesn't happen very often for me and I;m glad for that. It is a pain to have to take it back to the store.

Yes, it had to be sliced. The clerk was a youngman, probably around 20. He didn't seem to care much about working. I couldn't understand him and had to ask him to repeat himself twice as he asked if there was anything else I needed. I got a little too much as it was..haha! I agree with you though, he should of been able to tell that the meat smelled funny.

I have never had spoiled meat from a deli before if I did I would take it back for two reasons 1. I paid for the product and I want to be able to eat what I get and 2 like you commented the spoiled meat needs to be pulled so it does not make someone else sick. I sure hope they pulled the meat.
