Have you seen people who are pretending to be talking to someone over the phone?
Well, I did...several times. Most of which ended up to be very embarrassing. Well, not for me but the one who is pretending to be on the phone. Let me share some of these funny experiences.
There was this colleague of mine who was "talking" to someone over her cellphone. She was so into it talking about how much money she has and where she intends to go for a holiday (it was then nearing summer break). This person is known to most of us as arrogant and proud. She was happily "talking" to "someone" when suddenly her phone rings. I couldn't help but laugh and I think she noticed. After that, she pretended that the line was cut. She went on saying something like: "Geez, the line got cut because of this incoming call."
In another instance, with another person involved. My boyfriend and I was eating in the restaurant and there was this lady who was alone in the next table. The other tables were occupied by other couples. She's been there ahead of us and is obviously waiting for someone. Perhaps, so as not to be embarrassed by the situation, started "dialing" a number. Her voice was loud enough for most of us in the restaurant to hear. She goes like: "I've been waiting for almost an hour.... Oh yeah, I remembered, you are in a board meeting... blah blah blah."
And while she was still talking, the message alert tone of her phone went off and she suddenly turned red.
Both of these persons are using the same kind of phone I have and so I know whether the phone would really ring or if the message alert tone would sound as it did if the phone was in use.

I used this method quite a lot of times, especially when I wanted to end a face-to-face discussion with someone without being rude. The method was easy: I had one of my hands in my pocket next to the cell phone and because i memorised it's menu, I know how many times I had to push a certain button in order to get to the sound settings and I could make the phone ring by itself. At that moment I would excuse myself and walked away while pretending to answer the call.

Hi dolce_vita78
That is really so sad for people who do things like that, they must be lonley people to do that, there must be a reason for that or maybe just to show of that they are talking to someone.

Hahaha.. That was funny..
But you know, except for the arrogant person in your story, I'd feel bad for those who did pretend to use the phone in public. Most of them don't want attention really, they're insecure because they're alone and many people feel uncomfortable for being alone, that's why they'd resort to an excuse to talk to someone on the phone.
I know the feeling because sometimes I still do that. Most especially if I'm a stranger in a strange place. It's somehow comforting to do 'something' rather than sit like a wall flower.
But, that never happened to me (to be caught pretending to make calls) because I always learn to turn it silent before I do so. Plus keeping on pressing the call end button so as the lights would stay lit. hehehe.. That's a strategy.
But really, it's funny in a sort of way, most especially if it was someone who's really proud and arrogant. But if it's someone who's really uncomfortable that's why they did it, then it's something I could let pass.

I did it once.. I was in a taxi cab and I felt uncomfortable with the way the driver kept looking at the rear mirror. I pretended to make a call stating to "someone" the name of the cab and the plate number as if "someone" was waiting for me in my destination.

Oh! I did that too, I usually do that when I come home very late at night and I ride a taxi cab. I always pretend to talk to someone. But I usually send sms to my parents that I'm coming home and what type of cab and number. But I just pretend to talk so as not to give the cab driver some bad ideas.

people like that are so funny!! Usually those who pretend to be talking on their cellphone only brags about how expensive their cellphones are. Especially if its the newest model.
I have seen people doing such funny things. I was riding on a jeepney and I have someone beside me with an Ericsson P800. I also have the same phone and during that time that model was the fad. The girl would often get her cellphone from her bag even though it wasn't ringing. She just kept using the stylus and flip flip open her cellphone. Then she just decided to pretend to be talking to someone with a very loud voice. Everybody was looking at her when the phone rang. She got so embarrassed that she just turned it off and put it in her bag and got off the jeep though it's not her destination harharhar
. It was embarrassing
on her part and everyone laughed at her while she was getting off the jeep.

LOL!
Yeah, I am reminded also of some people who pretend to be busy checking messages or sending messages just to show off especially when their cellphone is new or of the latest model.

Aww. At least the lady at the table probably wasn't really noticed that much. I have an idea. If I ever get into a situation in which I decide to do that, I'm going to turn my phone off first! Or at least turn the volume and vibrate off. Then I can chat with my imaginary friend!

yep i've seen one to...ME! I was in Italy and my mom was very angry (wasn't my fault this time) and we were having lunch, there were other persons but they didn't noticed her being mad. She started getting so angry thta she simply left. I was curious what happened but still i didn't want for someone (who was on the tanle, meaning the one who made my mom angry) to notice it and starting to give me boring theories and blah blah blah. So to avoid being argued I pretented that i heard my phone (thank god that person was a little deaf) and I rushed to my room and grabed my cellphone. After i came down i pretended that i was talking (of course I placed the one of silence). This act permitted me to get out and ask quietly my mom what's wrong. SO i did went out still talking (in my native language so the italian couldn't suspect anything), than i stopped far to talk with my mom, the italian guy made her made and she calmed down. After we talked she went back but i told her that i must finish my acting. So I continued my 'play" talking, laughing and so on. (I onlso invented a nice story of who was and what did he want from me). The person believed me. A few hours later my mom asked me :"Were you really talking to someone?"...surprised I said no and she replied "Boy you're good i knew before it still you played it so nicely that started to believe that you were really talking to someone on the cellphone". We had a nice laugh. But believe me this wasn't the first "act" i've done and worked.
by the way here's the story i used to make things more real. i said that I friend of mine called me from my native country and he asked my to go out with the rest of the gang...but i couldn't because I was in italy. This way i confirmed my laughs and rising voice. I knew i fooled the him but I never thought that i could play so good that i fooled everybody.

There was one guy in school that talked on cell phone all the time. You could rarely see him without it. So, once I was walking with my friend right behind him while he was talking. We were joking that he may just pretend to talk so my friend called him just for fun. And guess what...his phone rang while he was in the middle of sentence.

Well, it 's quite funny to see such affairs in our life .I have experienced a similar affair in my life.About one year ago ,I worked in a mall of appliance. Some of my colleages did the same thing as you mentioned.Once, a saler of refrigirator was competing with her customer about price. It was required that she ask her leader for some reduce .However ,according to the rules of our company,it was very difficult .So she just pretended to make a call .However, when she was "asking "for reduce ,another call came into her cellphone. The customer got angry ,and went away.

No, but what I sometimes do is talk to two people at once.
One on the phone and one near me.
Then the one on the phone keeps saying - what ? And I say, I'm talking to someone here.
So it goes.

my husband said this happened with one of his clients one time. he was getting to the end of the job and about to ask her for the check and she got on her phone and was having a conversation. he packed up his tools and was standing there waiting for his payment and she put her finger up as if to say "one minute" and went right on chatting thinking he would just go away without his payment. then the phone rang and her face turned bright red. he asked for his payment and she said she did not have any checks on her so she was trying to avoid payment by being on the phone with no one!

Some people do it to impress others around them or to attract attention. Some deliberatelyy pretend to be talking to a very important political leader toshow that they are well connected. They are basically people who have a problem and do not have confidence in their own abiities. It givews yo a good reason to laugh with them around.

I've never seen that before. But I did that myself ;). That is for security reason. I was the only passenger in a taxi on the way to airport, so I pretended to call someone and told him the taxi plat number. I spoke loudly so the taxi driver could hear that. Kind of letting the driver knows somebody knows which taxi I was taking. If the driver has any bad intention, he might want to think twice.

I see this thing happen a lot in TV shows and movies. I laugh my butt off every time I see it happen. It serves the show-off people right to be embarassed by that kind of crap. hahahahahaha I love it when something funny like that happens. it gives the rest of the world a little bit of free entertainment.

Hi dolce,
I didn't notice anyone doing that but I have a friend before who told me that she really wanted to be with us in a nightlife activity one time and her hubby was home so, what she did was to let her phone ring as if she got a call and talked over the phone as if one of us invited her and really wanted her to be with us, LOL! I cannot believed it but she did her way! LOL! Poor hubby! LOL!

Hey dolce! That is really funny! Those people deserve
it! That's what they get for trying to pretent that they
are on the phone when they aren't! So they got caught
and ended up being really embarrassed! Good! I know that
people do stuff like that all the time and they usually
do end up making fools of themselves. It's so stupid.
I've seen people that have pretended to be on the phone
and they think that you can't tell. I would never do
something that idiotic! It just makes no sense!
