Wisdom teeth

To everyone who has had their wisdom teeth removed surgically (bottoms, specifically): how long did it take for your mouth/face/jaw/ears to stop hurting? I had mine out over a week ago and one side of my face is still killing me. I called the dentist and they told me it was normal and to just keep taking ibuprofen until it stops hurting. I've been taking it every 4 hours, but I'm still waking up in the middle of the night in agony. What kind of experience did you have with your wisdom teeth extractions?

I know when I had my bottom wisdoms removed it seemed to take longer than the upper ones. It is true that when the lower ones are removed you have to be more careful that you don't get what's called a 'dry socket.' Ask your dentist if it's ok to put some warm compresses on your cheek, that might ease the pain some. I feel for ya, nothing hurts worse than when they mess with taking out teeth like that...yeowch!!

There is something so unsettling about the term 'dry socket'!The dentist told me to try a hot compress 10 minutes on 10 off as often as I can. It definitely eases it a little.

Thanks for all the great info! Luckily this was 5 months ago and it healed just fine. I was a little nervous for the first while but everything that happened was normal. At least I will know what to expect when I get the top ones removed.
