Honestly, what do you think of nerds?

Nerd - In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with nerds.

Let's define the word Nerd through an online dictionary. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/nerd - a dull or an unattractive person. - single-minded and studious. - boring and anti-socials. - some people even call nerds as losers. Do you think nerds are the worst kind of people? Yes or No... why? What does it take for a nerd to fit into the fun-loving and sometimes nerd-hating society? Illustration (Ready... FIGHT!) What people seem to forget is that it is so-called nerds who have developed the technology we are all so fond of. einstein would have been classed as a 'nerd' and probably the first person to use fire would have been. If it wasn't for these people who look for different things to what 'ordinary' people do we may still e living in caves with no running water and certainly no internet. Society is made of of many kinds of people and each has a value.

Not only would Albert Einstein been considered a nerd, but so would have Alexander Graham Bell inventor and innovator who is widely credited with the invention of the telephone. And don't forget about that other nerd, Benjamin Franklin. He could have been partying and socializing, but instead he performed his famous experiment with a kite and a key, demonstrating conclusively that lightning was a form of electricity. Just think how different our world would be without these 2 so-called "nerds". I have the ultimate respect for these guys. Lloyd

That's nice to hear. Although it was rumored that Alexander Graham Bell was not really the one who invented telephone. But of course, I'm not sure and I cannot really confirm this since it's a rumor after all.

Einstein, a nerd? - Nerd or not nerd, he is still the man!
You got an excellent point nannacroc. I read from an anti-social website that Albert Einstein admits that he spends most of his time alone. I think that's enough reason to consider him as a nerd (although he doesn't wear eyeglasses). But thanks for the brilliant nerds in the past century such as Einstein. They really made our life easier to live.

Well I think they are just being themselves. They are different from most of the population but they are not losers as many of them really do go later in life. being an anti-social does not mean they are already worst or bad at all. they may not conform with the norms of the society but they are still part and are even more productive than the rest of them. Sometimes they are being outcast because they are different and they are good in terms of academic performances in school. When they are out of it then they would definitely do well out since they are good in school. Seldom do I see nerds that did not do well when they finish schoolings.

Proud nerd here, but i am not unattractive, or at least i don't think i am. But i am to some boring and anti-social. I am boring because i would just rather read a book then watch tv and if i do watch tv its more documentaries than sitcoms. If it wasn't for the internet i wouldn't be social at all, and thats mostly because people think i am nerdy and just don't get me.

For me honestly I don't think they are the worst kind of people. Most of the time they are misjudged because they excel in a field that others find it hard to excel. Well if it weren't for Nerds we wouldn't be enjoying some modern technologies that we experience today. For me for them to be "accepted" by society it's a two way street. Both sides should be open in accepting and understanding each ones differences.

Hang on, I resemble those remarks! Well, maybe not so unattractive. But to people in the "funloving" society I would certainly be all those other things, especially boring and anti-social. That's because I find most of the funlovers to be boring and shallow and often a waste of space, so I can't be bothered being nice to them. Greedy, hedonistic, basically stupid little twerps without two thoughts to rub together. Give them a second brain and it would be lonely. There, the Nerd Strikes Back, could be a really .... er.... boring? movie. Lash

Good point. The funny thing about this is that nerds tends to get the wrong impression most of the time. From my experience as a nerd, I always hear comments from other people stating that I'm arrogant, since I don't socialize or talk that much. Arrogance is something I don't want to possess! The Nerd Strikes Back? Better consult George Lucas for that.

Ah yes, the arrogance card, know it well. Arrogance as a word comes from arrogate, to take as your own a status you aren't entitled to, and since the things I am "arrogant" about are the things I am very good at, I don't believe I can be accused of not being entitled lol, so I can't be arrogant. Humility, as a contrast, comes from a root meaning of the earth, and Fr. Matthew Fox suggested that the true meaning of humility is to be grounded, to know one's place in the scheme of things. I know I'm very good at some things, but I also know there are certainly many people better than I at those things, and many people who do other things as well as or better than I. I know my place in the scheme of things, so I am humble. All of which is a bit off the point of the discussion. BUt being accused of arrogance and anti-social behaviour often happens to the intensely introverted, and I suspect many nerds are introverted, it seems to go with the territory of studious behaviour. Extraverts often cannot get a handle on introversion at all. Lash

Honestly I don't think of anyone as a nerd, period. Unless you mean computer nerds.Who am I to say this person is dull so they are a nerd? There are many different types of people and beauty and boredom are in the eyes of the beholder. So if there is a guy who isn't into the things I am into and he is more studious than I , I don't call him a nerd.He just isn't my type.

I've often said, I thought I'd like my next husband to be a nerd so he would be more focused on me than on what the neighbors thought or on that new sports car.

Those are the traits that make a good and faithful boyfriend. There are many types of nerds. There are some who I simply can't get along with (ie. those with a weird sense of humor and those who are 100% anti-social). I had a classmate who is 100% anti-social. When we say Hi to him, instead of saying Hi back, he will look away and look at the floor instead. There are also some who I do get along well with (ie. those with similar interests). Some of these nerds are Japanese anime lover and so am I.

OMG, I think I can relate to this one. When I was in high school, I was like 95% anti-social. Although I still manage to reply when people approaches me or get-along with them somehow when they accompany me. But most of the time, I spend my time alone and I am like the most behave student in our classroom.

Personally, I think it's better to look on the floor than to look away. What I mean to say is that when a person looks on the floor, there's a possibility that he/she is just shy. But looking away seems like showing arrogance.

That definition of nerds is pretty harsh!! lol I think that in general nerds are nice people but they perhaps find it hard to fit in with other people in society, so they devote themselves to something else, like studying. I don't think that other people should dislike nerds or any other group of people given a name by society, everybody is unique and just because they like studying or any other "nerdy" activities, it doesn't mean they don't have other interests or aren't interesting! i do think though that as we get older a lot of these groups become less important and people get more accepting. xxxx

For me, nerds are cool. It's just some people don't understand them. It's not their fault that they enjoy studying and discovering new things. It's just that they're into those things and that they're happy doing those. Some people just don't understand them really and in my opinion, those people are the LOSER ones.

From what I've learned from one of the previous responses, there was a nerd-hating society back in the 70's or 80's or something like that. I'm not sure if it's true but I guess it's a good thing that people are starting to value the worth and contributions of nerds in the society especially in the part of science and technology. Nerdfest? Sounds cool! I think I can participate on that.

Nerds are great. They are always the ones who grow up and end up being millionaires. So, I guess they should keep that in mind when someone calls them that. If that's what you are, then so be it. I have several tatoos and body piercings, but I like to play chess and I hang out in the library! So see you can never tell what kind of nerd hides behind someone's outward appearence.
