Is it OK to take a bath for children when they have fever?

Here some elders think it's better not to have a bath for children when they have fever. I don't really agree to it. I think a suitable temperature bath will be helpful for children to recover. What do you think?

Hi youless, the same thing happened here, in my place as well. The elders won’t allow anyone of the family having fewer to take bath. They believe and scare that the sickness would become more serious to do so. As I know one of the treatments in the hospital here to get rid of the high persistent fewer is to let the patient lying on a special iced bed. This was a true incidence happened to the daughter of my neighbor twenty years back. The married lady was 33 years of age that time. She was recovered from her illness then. She is now a happy and healthy woman anyway. So I believe that the temperature of the water which is a bit lower than the body temperature of the patient would help to lower the temperature of the body. Other than taking bath I would usually use a cold wet tower to wipe the body of my son especially the forehead, neck, back and the armpit part to cool down the body. Of course we must keep the tower always cold by soaking it again in the cold water, to make the tower not so wet by twisting it. I know to take fewer killer too much would cause side effects to the kid so I prefer to let the kid to take more water plus the chinese herbal tea(liang cha) to cool down the body. I'm glad that all these really work. posting and take care.

I don't know bout letting the child with fever bath is good or not. I have been brought up to think that it is not very good. Better to use a towel and water to cool down the child first. Let the medicine work its magic. And when the child is better, then let him/her have that bath. Otherwise, it is better to err on the side of caution.

Yeah... probably. But looking at the way my mum handles her other kids, well, they are all growing up strong and healthy. So, what she is doing should be correct. She makes one heck of a fine nanny! A good role model to follow.

Perhaps one day when you have your own child, you can draw a conclusion about what to do in this aspect

Hello youless. I think that it is better not to offer the children a bath if they have high fever. It would be better to take a bath when the high fever is gone.

It seems different people have different opinions about it. But you are right. If the fever is very serious, it's better not to have a bath.

I give my kids baths when they have a fever it can actually make them feel better. You need to make sure to have the water just lukewarm though or somethimes a cool bath will even help break the fever.

I think when a child had a high fever it is a big NO but sponge bath will do. But when my daughter had a fever (on and off) I just do some sponge bath and medicine but that trick has to no avail so my husband told me that better she take a bath I still hesitate but I boiled water and take her to bath then after that she had no fever. So I still don't know if it is ok or not to take a bath.

If you are careful to deal with it, I think it should be no problem.

In case the child has high fever a bath may be actually benefitted as it may bring the temperature down. However, as I have been told long back, a child should be allowed to have only as 'assisted bath' when having high fever. That is, the child should not be left alone while taking bath on such an occasion.

My daughter had fever for a couple of days... and even the doctor suggested that i do not give her a bath until the fever subsides... they said the bath might lead to a more serious illness like pneumonia... So i followed what my mother-in-law and doctor advised... since i know they mean well for my daughter...

i think it is always best to consult the doctor. i should be case by case - sometimes it is okay to bathe your child when he is fever, because it does help to bring the temperature down.. but at other times, it maynot be a good thing to do.. so.. at this young age.. always consult a doctor.

I was a nurse for many years and one of the things we would do if a tempature went up very high was give a tepid bath, because that would bring it down faster that the oral medication that we would give. After the tepid bath helped bring it down the medication would help keep it down (hopefuly).

Hello youless! Yes I think it's okey to bathe the children when they had high fever. It will actually lower the temperature so it help them reduce the fever, but you must do it in a brief period of time to prevent them to chill or feel cold. And you must wrapped them with towel then dress immediately. Bathing them when they had fever is actually recommended by health care providers now a days as they saw the benefits of doing that.

Hello Youless ,if you are talking of babies, then a spomnge bath is best during times of fever. In case of older children you can act according to the situation.....High fever is followed by a lowering of the same and then children tend to sweat a lot....Having a sponge bath or a body bath at this time is ok I guess.....It will bring instant relief to them.

In fact I think it's good to sweat when the children have fever. After that, they will recover soon.

yes i agree with you. elders has this style on putting blankets and a lot of stuff to wear when children has a fever. but for me a sponge bath will do the trick. a bath with warm water. and of course the extra care by changing the child clothes when they perspire, making sure the room is well ventelated and to eat the food that would make them gain their lost energy back.

I think that giving a child a bath when they are runing a fever atually helps him or her.It is actually recommended to give a child a luke-warm bath if they are running a high fever to help lower the temperatue.
