When was the last time you used a rotary phone?

I started a discussion this week about cell phones replacing wrist watches and I was surprised at the response. It got me thinking about phones. Do you remember rotary dial phones? We had one when I was growing up but I cannot remember the last time I saw one or the last time I used one. How about you? Do you have a rotary dial phone in your home? Your office? When was the last time you used one? It makes me wonder if my kids would even know how to use one.

I bet I was six years old the last time I used a rotary phone. It was my Grandmothe's and I remember her letting me dial the number to my house to see if my Mom was home. Wow, that seems like ages ago.

Oh I am much too young to remember rotary phones (liar, liar)... Actually I owned one as recently as the early 1990's but I did finally replace it with a push button phone. The ones in the office were replaced earlier than that!

Exactly, I'm way too young too................. well actually since I have a Bible verse for an avatar I may want to fess up about that! We had them when I was growing up. My brother (who was born blind) is an electronics geek. He could tell what numbers you were dialing just by the sound! Of course, he can do it now to with a touch tone phone. Amazing!

I remember those! We had a rotary phone in our house when I was a kid growing up. There were also a couple of payphones in the town that I grew up in that were rotary back when I was a kid. I haven't seen one of those in years. I think the last time I used one was when I was 15 or 16 maybe.....it was a long time ago.

I remember them and its been years. I'm not sure there are any left in Trinidad at all. The oldest we must have here are the touchtone phones. And averybody has a cell, there doesn't seem to be exceptions.

I believe some older folks may still have some in the US. Probably others who like all things retro may be using them too. Although with automated systems for so many customer service calls, it would be really ineffective. Thanks:)

rotary phone - layout was essentially unchanged, but it used a revised dial, modular cords, and was available in a variety of colors.
I remember using it last in 1989...My kids have never seen it... My son who is 12 years old, does ask about it while watching old movies or cartoons... I remember using it ...no redials...once you get a number busy.you dial the whole number once again.Being impatient while using these rotary phones, resulted in wrong numbers...

Also, thanks for adding the photo. I started thinking that maybe ppl may not know exactly the type of phone I was talking about. I thought "What if they think I mean the old crank type that I've only seen in movies"?

My granny used to have one when i was a little kid. About 16 years ago i suppose that was..... im from the UK and our emergency services number is 999 like 911.... i have always thought that it was the stupidest choice of number to be used with a rotary dial phone... you would be there for ages trying to dial it.

Yes, I love rotary phones. I had one growing up as a kid and we used it for a long time even after my grandparents has passed away. I think it has been about 12 years since we last used it. I would like to have another one but they are almost impossible to find. I have a wristwatch and I still wear it quite often. Both of my kids have one too as I bought them for Christmas.

I remember the rotary phone. It was still in use at offices I worked for way back in the 1990s. It was what we had as I was growing up, the whole phone would move as we dialed the numbers. I remember with fondness the ubiquitous red public pay phones owned/monopolized by teh Philippine Long Distance Company. I rather liked the tactile feel of the diallers.

Hi rocketj1. I remember having a rotary phone when I was younger. I remember we had what they called a party line and when you wanted to make a call, you had to check and make sure no one else was on the line. I didn't like it because lots of times you had to wait our you had people listening in on your conversation. I don't think my kids would know what a rotary phone is. lol Have a good lotting day.

My aunt had a party line too. She knew the call was for her because it rang quickly 2 times. The other party had the single ring. She was farther out in the country and it was common in her area. I don't think it was an option for our family.
