Hi all I just wondered if anyone has experienced this. My 2 yr old neice woke up with an awful case of hives on monday morning and it is getting worse. She has seen the doctor twice and they won't run to tests to find out why. yesterday the hives started brusing and I did some research and found that hives can bruise while healing but this is weird because if you touch my neice she gets a bruise. she has little black bruises all over her body and she is in pain. She is taking an antihistamine and has a cortezone cream but it doesn't seem to be helping. My sister and I are thinking of going out of town to see another doctor and get another opinion. So have you ever had or this??? If so, what caused it? Picture attached

That's odd. If they won't run tests, what are they telling you it is? Are they treating her for anything? Antihistamines should work to clear it up. If the symptoms are getting worse, then you really need to pay attention to her breathing. If it is an allergic reaction, if it gets worse she could go into anaphylactic shock, which could cut off her airway. I'd be bugging those doctors for an answer, and if they can't give you one that is satisfactory, I'd be taking her somewhere else. If something goes wrong, tings could go downhill quickly for 2 yr old.

All they will say is that it's hives and to give her an antihistamine and put the cream on her which is very painful for her because of the bruises. The only think we can think of is to take her out of town and have her checked by the hospital in the hext town.

I think you need to see a dermatologist who can help your niece.I think what she is experiencing is not just some ordinary hives. I have experience hives before and it is not the same as what your niece is going through. You need to see another doctor that will give your niece proper treatment and can diagnosed the illness.

well i can only tell you my experience. i had hives and even though i took benedryl, the subsiquently kept getting worse (this was over a weekend) and by the sunday evening, i was beginning to have breathing issues (due to asthma) and so we went to emerg and right away the dr ordered an iv drip of antihistimine and and few other things (i was there for about 6 hours or so) and it just went away after a few days after that. (it was an allergic reaction to meds). i would get a second, third and fourth opinion!!!

Is your niece on some sort of medication before she got the hives? As far as I know, taking certain medications such as antibiotics can be a potential cause for hives, especially for those who have certain medication allergies. It might be a little difficult to pinpoint a cause if she wasn't on any medications previously. Anyway, if the antihistamine and cortisone cream doesn't seem to help, I suggest that you stop administering them to you niece. Based on the presentation, I think the hives is pretty bad and serious, so I think an examination by a doctor is necessary. As you mentioned that the doctor your niece has seen was unwilling to run tests on her, try to take her to another clinic or hospital to get that checkup that is really much needed at this point of time. I wish your niece all the best in recovery, and if possible, I would love to hear and follow-up on her progress.

front view of the hives on my niece's tummy - these are the hives on the front of my niece's tummy and the bruising is from them as well.
she wasn't on any meds and she didn't eat anything out of the ordinary that we know of. we have taken her to the hospital 2 times. the first time was her family doctor and she didn't give her anything for it and the second time was a different doctor and her gave her the cream. We are going out of town to a different hospital to get another opinion. I will post our progress for those that want to know.

Well, has her detergent been changed maybe her parents tried a new soap or washed her clothes with a different detergent or it could be a food allergy. When this happened to my son. I remember that I did change detergents and it caused him to break out.

I am very reluctant to think this is an allergic reaction. If it is they would see some improvement with the cream and antihistamine. I am more apt to believe that there is something more serious at work here. More testing is required. Most definitely pursue another opinion and I wouldn't waste any time getting it either. The bruising looks very bad. And looking at the picture it looks like the bruising is widespread and not localized. Yes hives can bruise by I don't think it should look like that. When my daughter first started showing symptoms of ITP my first thought was an allergic reaction. I waited 2 weeks, ruled out food, detergents, soaps, material, everything you could think of and then took her to the doctor. Knowing what I do now, I could kick myself in the butt.

Please get another opinion ASAP there are alot of things this could be and what ever it may be is probably out of your doctors realm of expertese. The mayo clinic and the shriners childrens hospitals would be a great bet for a second opinion. Please let me know what you decide and how it turns out.

strawberrykisses I dont mean to be an alarmist but those bruises look like what I had with my shingles. get her to a different doctor because i have never seen hives bruise but chicken pox virus hurts and bruises and so does shingles and if its either of those two antibiotics and antihistmines wont do it,you will have to have an anti viral medication.for one thing the pain is dreadful as its nerve pain, the virus attacks a nerve and only goes part way around your body, usually hits the tummy area too. take her to a different doctor to be sure of just what it is, Ihav had hives and they itched, but shingles hurts like crazy. anyway poor baby she deserves to have a doctor who will really look into this and know just what is wrong with her.hope it is not shingles but you need to find out for sure.

i would take her to an infectious disease doctor right away before this spreads and gets worse. if what they are doing is not working then you need to take the bull by the horns and pursue this for her sake. i wish you well and keep us posted please. have they even bothered to do any blood work? doctors can be so arrogant sometimes and think they know everything.

PLEASE get a second opinion, it could be a food allergy as well, as a child, strawberries and butter both gave me hives, I grew out of it, but her's looks extreme and some food allergies can be deadly.

I would definately go to another doctor if possible. If not possible I would demand that this Dr. do some bloodwork and further testing. The parent of the child has a right to request further testing and he is walking the line of a malpractice suit if he flat out denies the request. I have never seen scabies but I have some friends that work at the hospital that are saying that scabies is almost epidemic in this area. Unlike people think they are not caused by being dirty. And I have heard them talk about bruising due to the severe itching that occurs with them. But you didn't mention whether she was having severe itching. Just might be something to look into. I wish you the best and hope you can update us on what it is.
