Do you remeber getting an allowance for doing your chores? Do you think you got a fair allowance and what did you do with it? Do you believe in allowances for kids today? What is a fair amount for a weekly allowance in your opinion?

My allowance wouldn't have paid me for all the chores which I had to do when I was a kid. I just got some pocket money on a Sunday and I usually headed straight to the sweet shop to spend. When I was in my teens I got a substantial increase in my pocket money, whether of not I did any chores. I used this to go to local dances and the cinema. I didn't give my children an allowance. I just gave them money whenever they needed it or if they were going to the shops, I would make sure that they had money to buy magazines or sweets. I think children these days have more than enough pocket money and most of them don't spend it sensibly.

You wonder if they are learning about saving. I think that learning about saving can be a good habit that is started young. If parents do not teach it and they dont see it, how can they learn? Your right because when most kids get money, its all spent quickly.I would be curious to know if very many have had piggy banks? I just got my grandchildren coin collectors kits.

Making children work for money is far better for them all round if they have to work for it, rather than giving it to them on a plate, they learn the value of money more and appreciate that hard work equals money. If children are given it without working for it they come to expect it and take it for granted, so it teaches children well. When I was a child I got pocket money but I had to do chores to get it which I didn't mind doing because I got rewarded. Children of today get far too much without having to lift a finger which is wrong, but that's just my opinion.

Very true, when we were at home doing chores if you did not complete your chores, you did not get a dime. You were not allowed to go anywhere. It was exciting if you finished your work because you could go to the show and get candy. You could go skating. My parents were strict and they didnt take aaaany of the excuses. My mom had a switch on top of the refrigerator and if you sassed back, you got it.
