My question is simple.I was doing a survey where I came across this often repeated statement and the thought of asking this question cropped in my head.I am really interested to know what my fellow Mylotters think about this. Agree or disagree?

No, do not agree! I do not agree in a particular case: if you do not have money, how you can not help the poor? And anyway, if you do not have money, are you happiest? If you are sick and do not have money for medicine, you're happy? Money is important, but important is what you do with them.

No problem tickpa. Yes you are right. Apart from fulfilling the necessary things like food, medicines etc, money is the source which gives us other comforts and luxuries which no doubt give us Happiness.

It depends on the person. Telling this to a homeless person, who has no permanent shelter, only old clothes that he rinses out in the river once in a while (using soap would probably be seen as a pollutant here in California) - does not know when his next meal is coming from, - I agree, the homeless person has my permission to bop you since you are obviously the Marie Antoinette type. ("Let them eat cake ...") Meditating further, what can people do - really - without money? What makes people happy? Possessions seem to be a popular choice, the latest SUV, the latest computer, the most expensive home - obviously that takes money ... unless you are a thief, that has its own implications ... maybe you can find happiness in jail with all the new-found friends ... I remember as an adolescent I wrote poetry and that made me happy. I would never think to share it with anyone else, being a very personal nature, HOWEVER - I used pen and paper, and that needed to be purchased. I don't think it would have been the same if I kept my works in my head, and obviously I didn't, because I don't remember a single poem I wrote in my notebooks back then. Of course other art works have their price too, whether in painting or drawing, (paper, canvas, paint, charcoal, what have you), sculpture (clay, marble, tools of the trade, what have you) - No, you have to have money there as well, buying the medium of your trade. To have happiness that does not involve money, obviously we need something that does not involve material possessions. Music you need musical instruments that get worn and torn, and eventually replaced, unless you are a musical genius like Mozart, but even then he put his childhood creations in ink and paper ... Nope - I only can think of two methods of "money-free happiness" if you find happiness in such activities: 1) donating time to a charitable organization - but only if you walk there. If you use a car, there are expenses, obviously. Even if you bicycle you have to buy the cycle, repair tubes occasionally, or even buy new tubes, and tires, and oil the chains, OR 2) Being happy in your current spiritual development - If you are not spiritually happy - obviously something is wrong. You will spend money to organizations for books, workshops, retreats, what have you, because you are obviously not happy in the place you are in. And so the final answer is - 1) walk to the feed the homeless event 2) Make up your mind what God is ... and THAT is my final answer ...

Ah, so true Qaeyious. Marie Antionette.... I wonder how many rulers were like her...oblivious of the basic facts about the economy and people, not only in France but other places too. Lack of money and its consequences, hmmmmm quite a correct example. Materialistic satisfaction has become synonymous of happiness. Good one there too. That ART too is not distant from fiscal influence....yes, another eye opener raely realised. Even welfare activities need some fund to make it a possibility. Thats right. Today it is not possible to "Lead Life" in practical sense, without money. But we are talking about huge amount. Is it necessary for happiness. While many a times it is, but then, many a times Money really can't buy happiness. Thanks Qaeyious for such a clearly and nicely expressed answer.

Happiness can't be bought by anyone as it is subjective. But money can help you be happy. Buying and owning the things you long to have would make you happy. Travelling to places with your family using your money will make you feel good.

Depends... I don't really have anything I want... money is out of the topic... My only dream is to become a Villain, if I ever needed money and someone came to assist me both financially and physically, I would be happy... does that count???

Well I disagree. Money can buy that XBox which will make you happy or money can but you that iphone which will make you happy or money can buy a lots of things which will make a lot of people happy. So i think you assumption that money can't buy happiness is wrong. on the other hand happiness can't buy money or happiness can't bring you money. Money will make you happy but happy will not make you happy. and i think most will agree with me here.

It is not my assumption nitesh.I came accross this phrase today and felt curious to know people's opinions on this. What you have explained is quite true.Money can make you happy but happiness cannot make money.Interesting way to put it.

Hmmm.. That's what people have been telling since ages-MONEY CAN'T BRING HAPPINESS. But just the put the question this way,can we be happy without money????? NOOOOO right? If money doesn't bring happiness why do people toil day and night to earn them, the can sit and relax and spend time with their family after they're sure that they'd get a handsome amount for spending the day. But none of us do that. All of us want to earn more and establish ourselves. I agree, money can't bring happiness but we can't have happiness without money. It's not possible practically, such statements are not applicable for real life. This is just my perspective Cheers

Absolutely right savitha. They should just re write it "money can't buy only a few things which do give happiness" and that would be true love which is present amongst parents and children, relationships, fun with friends etc,etc are afew things which give us happiness which money can't buy.Rest all other things which make our lives happy and comfortable are bought by money and money alone.

true happiness no. especially when you have too much you don't know what to do with it. but for people down on their luck (like most of the population) a little money can buy a piece of mind which does turn a little into happiness. as long as i'm comfortable and nor worrying then i can feel at ease. its not like i'm not happy without money, i happy with my family and the love i have from them, but get frustrated when i don't have money to buy them the food they want/need.

You are right emarie. Money is a necessity to lead ones life in this materialistic world. Without money survival is next to impossible.

Hello Daffdil. I think that money can buy happiness because we can give a different definition to happiness. We can view happiness from a different angle. For example, if I desire to have a more advanced laptop, but I have not enough money for it, I might feel unhappy. But once I get enough money for the laptop I desire, I feel content and happy for it. That can be viewed as some kind of happiness as well. So I think that it all depends on each individual on how one defines happiness as to whether or not money can buy happiness. Thank you so much for the discussion. Good day. I wish you happy as always.

Hi Daffodil20, I think there is something missing in your discussion, "if you say money cant buy true happiness", Then i would agree to it, for money is useless without someone to share with. I think the most important thing we should have is the feeling of happiness and all the things that money cannot buy for it doesnt have any replacement. Money cant buy Love, it can buy happiness for a moment but wont last long.

You are absolutely right Margarit. The missing word is 'true'. I came across this line somewhere and I re wrote it as it was because without the word "True" it is quite interesting to know people's views.

yeah Daffodil20..I believed to this statement. one hundred percent " Money can't buy happiness" You can't buy true friends thru money. you can only bought friends that would last immediately thru money.. That is why Happiness is in the attitude or personality of a person..being wholesome having peace of mind...This is the true happiness.

Happiness can be described in any way we want it to. I disagree that money can't buy happiness, because if you have money it seems like you have the power to turn your world upside down with pleasures in this world to make yourself happy. But yes I agree, if you say money is not everything, and money can't buy a perfect happiness!

Money can bring you happiness, but one which is just temporary. So yes, money can never buy true and absolute happiness. This is because both money and happiness are relative terms just like almost everything in this world. There is no absolute happiness or wealth.

I agree totally. All money can buy is material possessions, time and favours! It certainly doesn't address the core fundamentals of what defines us as human beings. A person may have all the riches in the world yet still be lonely and depressed for example. Money may satisfy material desires but it will never compensate for the true happiness we can find through love, family and the simpler joys in life.

Very well said James !! So true. Human beings have higher goals and purpose. Money can provide only material comforts and satisfaction. Love, family and simpler joys are too prescious. No amount of money and riches can help us to obtain it. Beautiful thoughts.

I think deifferent people have different answers,With money people can buy whatever they want and go wherever they please.Although quite a few people agree that money bring happiness,in my opinion the relationship between money and happiness is not equivalent Happiness is not as simple as making more money.trading our life energy for money can deprive us from inner nourishment that can everntually lead our lives into a downward spiral Money can't buy Time ;respect;health;family;self esteem and so on

I will keep my opinion. If you had no money, what could you eat ,drink, wear and so on?You may say that i can plant the rice and grow the vegetable and so on.And i can lead a original life. But you cannot make everything yourself .If let you go back to the original society, will you be happy with that?Of course i couldnot imagine that life.In someway ,money can buy happiness. But sometimes, money cannot buy happiness when you need family, love and so on...

Correct. A reasonable amount of money is a must for survival in modern times because there isn't barter system like ancient times.LOL. You are so right even a huge amount of money and riches can not buy happines when needed.Like family, love etc..
