What is the meaning of ethical hacking?

I have heard about the term ethical hacking many a time but i do not know the exact meaning of the term ethical hacking.Professionally i guess that it is retrieving a program that is lost due to some data corruption and regaining the lost data along with correcting errors in the system.But please tell me what does this term exactly mean.
