Animal Urine smell- can it be removed?

We have a new puppy and he seems to always go to the bathroom on the carpet where another dog must have gone at some time as the house always smells like animal urine on really warm days. I have cleaned with carpet cleaner and I have sprayed Febreeze, but the smell is still here. Does anyone know of anything that I can do to remove the odor? It is disgusting when it is warm outside.

Have you tried using a brush when you clean the carpet? How about using some baking soda to rid the smell? I know there is a cleaner specifically for pet urine stains and smells. I believe it is called "Urine be Gone". You could do a search for it. Good luck!

That is the name for the pet smells and it does help. I also found some Pet Fresh no vacuum stuff that has helped a lot too. I will continue cleaning and yes, I do use a brush.

There are many products designed to remove pet odors. However, if the urine has gotten down to the padding, you will probaby never get the smell out. I finally pulled up all the carpeting and replaced it with tile. Area rugs can be shampooed easily or else washed in the machine.

I hope that is not the case as I can't afford new carpet right now and I won't put tile in the living room.

Have you tried applying white vinegar to the offending spots? It would sure be worth a try. Vinegar neutralizes many odors and is a cheap household cleaner. I use it all the time around my house. I do home daycare and hardly a day goes by when someone does not piddle on my wood floors. I mop them with a mixture of white vinegar and oil. The vinegar removes any odors from the wood and cuts through the dirt. I also add it to my husband's stinky laundry (he is a mechanic so his dirty clothes really stink sometimes!). It works miracles for me and would be a cheap thing to try. I would soak the spot with straight white vinegar and let it sit for an hour or so before blotting the spot with a dry cloth. It will smell like vinegar for a short while, but that smell will go away along with the urine odor. Good luck!

Thanks for the hint. I had heard of using white vinegar but I need something for the entire carper as it has to be on the carpet from before.

We used to use Petzyme when Jessie had an accident. http://www.howtocleanstuff.net/floors-and-carpet/carpet/removing-urine-from-carpet/ There are other cleaners. I do not know if there is a natural based one. But if you go to Safeway or to the Pet store, they will have some removers or carpet cleaners especially designed for this purpose.

Thanks. I had heard of Petzyme too but I never knew anyone who used it and wondered if it worked or not.I will check at the pet store tomorrow.

There is a special carpet cleaner and odor remover for pet stains/smells (look under either category at the store). I don't recall the name. Hopefully somebody else does. It works great but you might have to apply it a couple of times before all is gone.

Thanks. I will look again. I have tried several of them but they don't seem to eliminate it.

Well, we had bought two carpet steamers. The 1st one my dog actually chewed the cord and ruined it. But we would just steam the carpets all the time. It picks up stains and odors. The cleaner used for the steamer comes in different scents. It's the only thing that really worked for us when I was training my dog. But then we put the pads on the floor, and he eventually learned to use them. Even though he gets his walks, we still keep a pad out at all times just in case. I don't trust him. lol.

I have been thinking about getting one so this may be my excuse to have to buy it. Thanks for the hint.
