You Have a Weird Name!

I used to be a teacher and I have encountered many strange and weird names, some of which I will remember for life. I used to have a boy in my class whose name is Dragon. Really! I'm not joking. I guess his parents want him to be fierce, but he was rather timid, or at least that's what he showed in front of me. I have another boy called Rommance. He was a nerd. Nobody like himself, which is sad. And far from romantic. I wonder why parents give such names to their kids who may not live up to them. Have you encountered a weird or funny name? What are some examples you have? Maybe you have a weird name. Did your parents give you the name or you adopted it yourself?

Yeoj, that's weird. I know soem people in my country like to combine both parents' names for their kid's name. But the trend has not been popular nowadays. Are you an Apple?

Talking about surnames used as first names, I have a student named Clapton (like Eric Clapton).

I wonder what parents are thinking when they name a baby as you mention in your discussion. I really think a last name to use as a first name sounds more professional and do think those kids grow up to live up to their names. My first name really is Carol. Was pretty boring when I was in school even though there were many by the same name. Our kids have names that are common but pretty. Didn't want them to be picked on because of their first names. Kids like to do that to other kids! My nickname is Birdlegs but it's well deserved. I have very skinny legs that look like the base of a pogo stick. My birth name was something odd, other than Carol but when adopted, it was legally changed. What's odd is my birth name was that of a state where my adopted father grew up.

I've never used my birth name. It was legally changed when I was 6 weeks old after the adoption was final so nobody has ever called me Georgia.

How interesting, Carol! Do you still use your birth name? Would you mind if others call you by that name?

I like different names as long as they arent way out there, We ourselves have a September (my mom asked me to name her that), Shalette, Storm, Tessa Raine, and a Wynter Rose. I love ones that are just a little different and so-called off. On the other hand Im soooo grateful my biological dad refused to let my mom name me .. get this .. Marvalina Eugenia .. *GAG* lol

I checked and Storm is a character in X-Men. X-Men was a comic before it became a movie, so it definitely has been around longer than the movie. Storm must be a strong character!

I like Wynter Rose and Tessa Rain, but Storm? I'm not so sure though. Storm is also a character in X-Men, am I right. I kinda like the weather-related names. Marvalina Eugenia? My goodness, it's a mouthful!

Years ago when I was growing up, a name that was even slightly unusual would have been a sure way to get teased on the playground. Most parents stuck with "normal" names like Mike, Cathy, Jeff or Jennifer. Back then, even names like Brooke and Ashley were considered unusual because Brooke had a slightly hippie vibe, while Ashley was a "crossover" name that had been used for boys before becoming a girls name (think of Ashley Wilkes from "Gone With the Wind") Funny how times have changed... Nowadays, I see a lot of androgynous names (I have encountered more than one Taylor, Morgan, Spencer, Jordan, Dakota, and Dallas), place names (Paris as well as, again, Dakota and Dallas) or surnames as first names. These names are now so common, nobody thinks twice anymore. "Hippie" names seem to be becoming more mainstream (Rain, Summer, Willow etc.). I have also seen a lot of strange spellings of traditional names: Gennyfer, Mikayla (instead of Micheala), Cyndi, Danial (for Daniel or Danielle). I guess everyone wants to be different, yet still conform at the same time. I personally prefer traditional names, but I understand that many people will opt for something unusual just to be different. However, as far as I'm concerned there is different and then there is just plain weird. A lot of parents try to pick a name that "matches" the surname. I have encountered a Harley Davidson and an Ocean Lake (no kidding!). The worst one I ever heard about...this was in the news years ago...was the family with the surname Daub. The parents named their son Zip-a-Dee-Do. Poor kid! I'm willing to bet that as soon as he is old enough, he will change his name to Mike.

I have not stopped laughing. I really like Harley Davidson and Ocean Lake, those are real names? My goodness! I didn't know weather-related names are hippie. I kinda like those. Maybe I was born in the era. Androgynous names are quite the in-thing nowadays. The last name is super funny. When I was pregnant, we had a difficult time trying to find a name which was not difficult to pronounce, and something different from the current trend. Once we finally settled for a name, my daughter came. It's like she knew she's supposed to come out then when we found a name for her. It was a rather traditional name, nothing fancy at all.

It's Christmas all year round for him. That's very funny. You know what, you can write an article about all your experiences with funny names!

Yes, Harley Davidson and Ocean Lake are names of real people I have encountered. The funniest, though, is a guy I knew back in university. I don't really count this one because it was not his birth name and not given to him intentionally, so it is not a case of "what were his parents thinking?" But still, it was very funny. My friend Chris's parents divorced when he was very young. His mother remarried, and his stepfather adopted him, so he took on his stepfather's surname: Mis. That's right...he became Chris Mis. He always said the Christmas season was "his" time of year.

Pastor Pastor is weird. Starsky is actually a name from a popular series in the 70s or 80s, Starsky and Hutch. I think his parents love the series. You just mentioned that that's your niece, so it must be a girl

There is no doubt that people seem to be becoming more and more creative with names these days and I have to admit that "Dragon" is certainly one of the more unique ones I have every heard! I don't remember any overly odd names at the moment but I did meet a woman in a training course once called Tuesday! What gets me as well is how people are choosing to spell standard names with all of these bizarre combinations now. For example Sydney would be spelled as Sidnee and Toffany as Tyfanee etc. It just makes it all so difficult for the child when you think about it because they will alwat=ys have to correct people's spelling of their names!

YOu know what, it makes it even worse for teachers to remember the different spelling. Misspelling will be quite common and I don't think kids really like teachers who misspell their names. In attempts to make the common names a little unique, such spelling are making me dizzy

One time in our school, there was an awards ceremony. The announcer announced "Francis Joseph" or something like that. We were shocked to see that a girl stood up. How weird for parents to name their daughter a boy's name. And recently, I got to know a girl named Luke. She sometimes spells it as Lhuke to make it a bit less of a boy's name I think or make it cuter. By the way, have you heard of a news about naming children weird names? I think it was 2 or 4 months ago. A judge in Australia (I think) was mad at how parents give their children really weird and sometimes, inappropriate names. A name would be "Lula who does the Hula". I forgot the rest though and where the article is online, but there are more weird and really inappropriate names that would definitely make those children humiliated that one came to the judge in order to change her name. As for my name, I like my name given by my parents

I know. Sometimes there are names which are more suitable for the other gender. I came across another article. This person wanted her kid to be named in numbers! So when you meet the kids, you have to say, "Hello, 74279472907595!" or somethign like that. What's the world coming to?

Talking about memories. There was once when I had a bad memory when it comes to having weird names. I have a student with a unique name. One day I spotted his name in the newspaper. His name is so unique that I don;t think anyone else would have such a name. He had commited a crime and was being sent to jail. He has left school by that time. When I brought the article to the attention of the school, they confirmed it was him. So sometimes when it comes to having weird names people tend to remember, I hope they remember you for the right reasons.
