How long did it take you to learn how to swim?

I used to be so afraid of water that I never learned how to swim even if I loved going to pools and beaches when I was younger. But something happened one day when we went swimming. My son was taught by a friend how to swim and I saw how she taught him. It was very easy and fast. She just let my son submerge and emerge his head in water while counting 1 to 10. After a few minutes she held my son's hand and they went floating. After only fifteen minutes, I was surprised when my friend left my son floating alone in the middle of the pool. i was so nervous I thought my son would drown but when I looked again, my son was floating alone and enjoying the water. When we went swimming the next time I tried submerging myself in the water and keeping my breathe. I did that several times until I could keep my breathe inside the water. Then I tried floating. What a surprise! I learned how to swim with just emerging and submerging in water. I couldn't believe that I learned how to swim that fast. It was only fifteen minutes and I could swim for a few meters. I enjoy swimming now and I often wonder how I did it in so short a time when I was so afraid of water before. I was already in my forties when I finally learned how to swim.

That's a very inspiring story! I learned to swim just about when I learned to walk; after that I started training for a few years, got ready for competition, but I finally quit. :P I still remember my coach and trainer's face when I told him I'm leaving. When I see competing swimmers, I kind of regret quitting. :(

My wife too was very scared of water and woudl never go near teh pool. After a lot of motivation she started comign inside th water and soon enough she took it as a challenge and learnt how to swim. She soon started enjoying swimming and would accompany me everyday. Swimming is a wonderful exercise and is very refreshing.
