why are some guys just messed up??

so today was a pretty good day, niothing bad happened untill a little while ago. one of my friends from work called in to let us know the reason she wasnt going to come in was because her bf, well now former boyfriend, beat the crap out of her. now im not sure of teh situatiomn, all i know as of now is that she went back home because she forgot something an dhe was in her apartment, supposedly looking for his phone an dthat he then started hitting her, not sure why. whey doesnt really matter though i mean ive seeen him hes almost 6 feet tall ansd shes 5;0 and really petite, so why would he even do that? i mean hes alwatys cheate don her and shes always taken him back, also shes the mother of his 8 month old twin boys that hes so proud ofhes not paying rent hes just mooching off her at her apartmen.. i mean the guy has everything that he could possible want and isnt doing jack, and he hits her? what is it that makes guys hit women? i mean, what goes through their head?she never did anytjing but try to please him, so he thanks her by punching her in the face. the good thing is, theis girls not dumb. she called us from the police station =) we dont really know what going to happen to the guy yet though. of course, after he beat her he ran like the coward that he is.
