My organic chemistry teacher gets really pissed when students don't use their common sense. He'd make a big deal out of it.
Or perhaps I have to rephrase because no one is born without common sense. How do you feel towards people who fail to use their common sense? Are you patient with them or do you get annoyed?
I have to admit I usually get annoyed. Of course, when I am in a good mood, I try to be patient. What about you? Maybe you can also share an experience.

It's hard to justify wether a person had really used their common sense or not. I believe all ordinary person with average I.Q. should have common sense on basic and simple things. But sometimes, people are confused or distracted by something else, until they 'lost' their common sense. Panic and pressure is another cause of people act like they do not have common sense. So, we should use our own 'common sense' to analyze under certain condition, why some people lost their common sense. With such thinking, we could avoid to be annoyed and stay happy, cool and calm. Steadiness can help us to have more common sense and resolve problems in the correct way. I have been annoyed by my students for not doing their mathematical problems with common sense. After several attempts, I found that it's because of their language proficiency problem instead of analytical skill. That's how they misinterpreting the question, and seems like do not have their 'common sense'.

That's how my organic chemistry teacher is, too. But it's not because of language proficiency problem, it's because we students over-analyze things. I guess that term fits the way we students think. Too distracted by principles and heavy theories and whatever.
Thanks for this view.

That's the common issue everyone of us might face in our study. That's why sometimes, we couldn't put our common sense in use, after being obsessed by theories and principles which are confusing or contradicting. So, I think it's unfair for your teacher to blame the students for not having their common sense. I know organic chemistry is tough and its contents are not easy to be comprehended. Therefore, I would not be surprised that the students are being confused and out of their common sense. Your teacher should be more considerate and understanding in this case I suppose.

there isnt anything more baffling than an intelligent person who doesnt use their common sense. it happens and you just sit there in a state of disbelief lol! and then i at least, ask "you're joking right?" LOL!
i find ppl like that unbelievably annoying..rather agitating more than annoying. you say that "no one is born without common sense" i dont know about that. ive known a couple of ppl in my life, and had to suffer with working in the same office as another..who certainly seemed to lack anything remotely resembling common sense.

Aw. Well. I don't know.. I haven't really encountered anyone downright dumb. I feel sorry for your ex co-workers. Obviously, that's real tough.
Same here, I get terribly agitated.
