Researchers in Europe studying hypercholesterolemia (high blood cholesterol) conducted a survey and found that patients who were in lipid-lowering therapy had been sub optimally treated. The CEPHEUS study involving 15,199 patients found that 45 percent did not achieve LDL-cholesterol levels was low even in the highest risk groups such as diabetics and coronary disease patients. A similar study is now launched in Asia, where 50 percent of global cardiovascular burden occrs. this is the largest asia-wide study on the management and treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Approximately 8000 patients and 565 doctors will be involved across Korea, Hongkong, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore. "I hope CEPHEUS in Asia will show us some unique characteristics that give doctors in the region valuable insight on how to help patients achieve their cholesterol goals and reduce the risk of fatal heart disease," says Dr. Park Jeong Euy, international coordinating investigator of CEPHEUS in Asia.
