In the public school i work as the ICT manager, i set up a wifi zone so that students who has notebooks can access the internet for free. being the first public school to offer such in our province, NEWS quickly spread, soon not only the students but some other people park nearby and access the internet for free. However their presence is starting to annoy me because they make the network respond slower, not to mention their rubbish of food wrappers and others littered in the area. I wanted to block them off but i wouldnt want them calling me selfish, can anyone help me with this problem i've got.

We have the same problem in our school. We have a computer laboratory that just offer a wi-fi zone for free. The catch is, students and even professors started buying notebooks and laptops to take advantage of the free internet connection. Sometimes, they would flock in the hallways outside the computer laboratory. Sometimes, on a vacant room where there is no class that's going on. The problem is that, the hallways become crowded, and the vacant room turns out to be not vacant anymore. this annoys the next class that would occupy the room.

hey there calyxus, that is true for my case too, they seem to enjoy the free connection too much, another bad effect is that they also take some others with them to worsen the situation more, so what did the laboratory manager in your do as to ease up the growing problem?

thanks a lot for your ideas, i have a very good solution already, i had all the students and teacher register their mac address and i assign them an ip. in that way only the enrolled ones can use, turning off the net is not advisable for me because there are other computers used by my boss and other employees that needs to be online

Well, the laboratory manager just restricts the IP addresses on who can or cannot access the internet. Or at times they just disconnect the wi-fi connection, especially when classes are going on. Or the more blatant way is to tell those people frankly that they cause inconvenience in the side of the school. They might get offended, but what the heck, that's the truth; so they have to deal with it.

you can create a password for students only so that outsiders can't access your network...

I have tried that already however the glitch is that the students themselves give away the password, thanks for sharing anyway.

Well I am all for a free Wifi zone, but understand an invasion of privacy completely! Our local school has Wi Fi but the local library has free wi fi! So maybe you could see if your local library has free wireless internet, because my local one does! I hope this helps! I don't really know what else to do to help, I'm not too good with stuff like that!
