In my own books, especially technical books I invariably underline the sentences which are important and are of important for any time reference. Thus it helps me to go to the point directlymany atimesin case of emergency! Inother books also I impulsively underline the sentences, quotes or paragraphs which touch my heart in appreciation of the author! But I do this only in the books which are owned byme. I never do such things in other books or in the books borrowed from any library! Depending upon the reason I underlined the sentence or paragraph , I put either a '!' or a '?' mark! Exclamation mark is to appreciate and question mark is either it is not clear or not agreeble tomy thoughts! Well I understand that this may not be a idea liked by many people as this leaves a book looking very shabby, but I am really helpless at it! Do you have an habit of underlining the sentences of your liking in any book ? Kindly respond! Thanks!

I have a tendency of highlight something that I think may be important in my textbooks. Those are the only books that I really write in. If I get something that I have to analyze for an exam or something, then, not only will I highlight, I will underline, write on, anything really. I will try to 'massacre' the document as much as I can. But otherwise I don't really write anything in my books.

when i read your discussion my college years flashed back. lol. during that time, i seldom write in my notebooks as i use our book in reading & reviwing at the same time. this will save my time from writing & save me from buying notebooks. haha. so imagine how my textbooks would look like. during discussions in the class i would jot down important keywords our instructor would say. i have a yellow marker that i always have & would highlight the important details as well. during short quizzes & exam it would be easier for me to review & go back on important details. my book would look like mess while my classmates sill have neat book that's looks like brand new & somehow unused. there's also one reaosn behind why i do this to my textbooks, i feel like those books served its purpose as it teached me while i was in school. it's like telling the book thank you for serving it's purpose & the book would reply back saying your welcome. weird! lol. also imagine what would the neat textbook think? did he ever served his purpose as a textbook where a student learned? well that's what i think. some people do have the attitude of making their book clean. we respect that of course. because for my novel books & some of my collections, i have the habit of making them so neat, no dog ears as much as possible -- so treasured. these kind of books are of course a whole lot different form textbooks. happy mylotting!

not only do i underline things in my book, i also highlight it and write notes beside the ones that seem important to me at that time. also, if it is a book that i use for school, usually it has notes all around it so that i'll be able to remember why i highlighted the sentence in the first place.
