I listened to republican, after republican attack Colin Powell for supporting Barack Obama. Many of these same people couldn't stop talking about Powell's integrity six years ago when he was helping the Bush administration push American into war. Now these same people are calling him a traitor, and questioning his same integrity. Do you think these people were wrong then, or are they wrong now?

Of course, we could have expected that many would do so, it's whatpilitical people do. I have always had a great admiration and respect for Co. Powel and if he were to run, he would probably have my vote. I am disapointed he would fall in to the Obama tank, but the man is entitled to his opinion and I still respect him. It should be noted, that though he is a conservative man, he is mildly so, so this doesn't come as a huge suprise to me, I had almost expected it. I'm not going to atribute it to race, I think that had little to do with it in fact, but one can't help but wonder, especialy after Obama came out and said today thathe was now considering publicly, what else besides his distain for the way McCain conducted his campaign and the Palin pick, what else were his motives.

****typo fix***** "after Obama came out and said today thathe was now considering publicly," L should read: after Obama came out and said today thathe was now considering publicly the idea of Powel as an advisor

Thanks for your response X. It didn't surprise me either, but like you said I don't really think it had as much to do about race. I think that he really did this because of how he was treated by the Bush administration, and I think this is proof the Powell still is upset with what happened. I think that he feels he made a mistake, and doesn't want to do that again. I was surprised that he came out and attacked the selection of Palin, I don't agree with it either, but it didn't surprise me at all.

Well I still respect Colin Powell. Infact I always hoped he would have put his name in the hat. I would have voted for him. But he does not seem to want to be in elected office. I was shocked by his decision, but he is entitled to his own opinion. It does not influence my decision. But then I never listen to any endorsements to tell me who I should vote for. The reason I was shocked was because I really did not see Powell and Obama being the same on a lot of issues. I did not think that they would have a lot in common politically. But maybe Powell has changed a lot of his views. If he has that is fine. That is his right. It is not a matter of being a traitor. Anyone who says that is just upset because he slit from the party. He has the right to vote for whoever he wants or endorse whoever he wants. Just like everyone in this country. Just because you are a republican does not mean you HAVE to endorse every republican out there just like a democrat does not have to endorse every democrat out there. They are not sheep. They are individuals that can make up their own minds.

Thank you very much for your response Lil. I am very impressed with your response, many have attacked Powell, but you have taken the high road, and that is very refreshing. I think that one of the reasons that Powell is supporting Barack is because he wants to get us out of Iraq, and I think that he feels that if he would have stood up, we wouldn't be there right now. I also feel that he really regrets not standing up for those guards at Abu Ghurab prison. But, I agree that his support isn't going to change my vote either, but I also feel that he does help Obama.

I've heard them all too, and it sure didn't take them long, did it? As far as I'm concerned, Powell has always had and always will have integrity and those who are attacking him now don't even know the meaning of the word let alone have it. I've brought this up before and someone else has mentioned it in this discussion but it was a different story when Joe Lieberman endorsed McCain, wasn't it? Annie

It doesn't really surprise me but, I feel it's very sad. I had no idea he spent 40 years working for the government and has/had the respect of many Americans including; Democrats, Independents and Republicans. These idiots that are claiming it's a race thing, did they think the same thing when Liberman came out and supported McCain? Heck no. I'm sure the Republicans are just pissed that one of their own highly respected would come out and support Obama and back up with his support with so many valid reasons.

All Colin Powell really did was show up late for the party - the Republicans for Obama party, which is the hottest party in town right now. But the ones who are not willing to attend have a real problem with the ones who've gone. Some of what they say is almost as bad as some of the "pro-Americans" at Palin rallies.

Thank you for your response Philjas. I think that Powell really wasn't sure who he was going to vote for, and it really upsets me to hear people say that he just needs a job. I understand how you feel about those that have turned, but McCain has a history of dividing the republican party, so we all knew what to expect.
