spleen or no spleen

My brother was in a car accident a few days ago and he had to have his spleen removed.I know we can live without our spleen but is there any side effects from having none?I know he has to go on antibiotics because he has nothing to fight infections,Have you had your spleen removed or know someone who has and what side effects if any are they having?My brother is doing fine and is coming along well.
