Would You Shoot?

If you caught an intruder breaking into your home, and you had a gun, would you shoot the intruder? It's easy to conjecture about such things, but think about it, would you have the nerve to actually do it? My answer to my own question......I don't know. I realise that sounds like a cop-out but I guess it would depend on how frightened I was for my family or myself.

It would depend on the situation, if he was threatening someone in my family, i would aim for the legs/arm or should, just to stop him, people forget that you can still be charged with murder even if it was in self defense, plus other peoples lives are still valuable even if they do INCREDIBLY stupid things... so yeah, I think I would shoot, but not to kill.

That's an alternative to be sure and a good one as long as you are comfortable with it. Thanks for the comment.

Well I might just used it to create fear against perpetrators but then if I am cornered then I might be forced to do so.

I would shoot, only if the intruder did something to make me feel as though I was threatened. If he leaves after I asked him or what not, then I wouldn't. But, as I've said, the only time when I might shot is if the intruder makes a movement that makes me feel that I'm threatened or someone I love is threatened.

That's a good criteria for a decision as to whether you should shoot or not: Shoot only when threatened. Thanks for the response.

Yes, you have to think fast. That's why I would give some thought as to what the appropriate response would be to any given situation. In other words, know what you would do so you wouldn't have to think too quickly. Come to think of it, I believe there are classes available for just such contingencies. Thanks for your response.

Hello again, It's me! I would have to know for certain that mine or my family was in danger before I shoot. The intruder would have to be seriously a danger to us. To take another person's life is a drastic action. I would like to think and know that I would shoot if need be, because if you hesitate, or give the intruder a split second to do harm, that can be terrible. First of all, if you can scare them away, great! But if not, injure the intruder in all limbs and then ask questions, if possible. Who knows until you are in that predicament. You have to do what your instincts guide you to do.

It depends really. Like, if it was a really big tough-looking guy and I was all alone downstairs while everyone's asleep, I'd definitely shoot, but I won't shoot to kill I'll just aim on his leg or/and arm; so he'd be rendered harmless. But if I knew I could take him on easily which is often the case then I wouldn't bother :P

So your criteria depends on the size of the intruder. You must be pretty confident in your ability to physically defend yourself. I wish we all had that ability. Good luck to you and I hope you never have to find out. Thanks for the response.

That's right. Thieves have to know that they are taking their lives into their hands when they do such things. Thanks for the response.

As long as I was sure the intruder was really an intruder, I'd seriously consider it. It's likely I'd go after him with one of my sticks, or swords instead to try to spook him into running. And only if that was smart in my situation. But if the situation said that shooting was the wisest thing, then yes.

That's right. You shouldn't be shooting your neighbors. You seem to have thought this out pretty good. My motto is: always be prepared.

This is a difficult one for people who live in the UK. There have been a number of people who have gone to prison for attacking people who have broken into their house. You can use reasonable force but not excessive. This means that if someone comes into your house and tries to attack you with a knife, you fight and they fall on the knife and die, then you will not be charged. However if someone breaks into your house, you fight, get the knife and then stab them as they are running away. Then you will be charged with murder My personal opinion is that if you break into someones home, then you have to take the consequences and the homeowner is right to defend their property

Actually it is difficult for victims in the US as well. There seems to be a overly eager willingness to make a perpetrator out of a victim and vice-versa. Do you ever feel unsafe in your home because of this law in the UK?

Yes I would shoot. It's my house, my family and my life and I want to protect it. I pay good money for my stuff, not for some looser to come and take it. If someone broke into my house, I would not think twice. I would aim for an arm or leg though, I would not aim to kill unless they tried to kill me first!

I probably would be shaking so bad I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. I can certainly understand how you feel. Thanks for your response.

If necessary, yes. If possible, I would give the scumbag a chance to surrender, but my first priority would be to protect myself and my property. I'm certainly not a guy who wants to hurt anyone, but if someone chooses to commit a crime, they only have themselves to blame if they end up getting hurt or killed by their intended victim.

yes i think i would if the person who came inside my home would cause a really big threat to my family. yes i think i will be able to pull the trigger if im in a do or die situation. but before i do should i would also think that i would first assess the situation and then determine if would i need to take the intruder's life in order to be safe

We should all have a plan of attack for every scenario we can think of. And it doesn't hurt to think about those things once in a while.

I'd shoot the guy in the leg or something. I wouldn't want to kill somebody for intruding, but I don't play around when It comes to my family. If anyone is putting my family in a dangerous situation then they are putting themselves in a dangerous situation. I know this sounds like a very alpha male thing to say and like you said you don't really know until your are in the situation. But I do think that I wouldn't tolerate my family being in danger and it wouldn't be that difficult for me to shoot someone in the leg.

You know, that's a solution a lot of people would use. Unless they were threatening my family. That's when common sense disappears and craziness takes over. I hope it never happens to you. Thanks for the response.

If I was seriously fearful of my own life, I would definitely shoot them. And, the law of California would be on my side, not theirs. I would feel bad for having to shoot someone, but not as bad as I would feel if that someone hurt me or my family

It depends. If the intruder was going to hurt me, my family, or my pets I would definitely shoot them, probably I would try to shoot them in a place where it wouldn't kill them. I would try to avoid it though. I dont really like violence and also it would really suck to have blood everywhere.

Just be prepared. Have a plan in place just in case. It would be the same as having an escape plan should your house catch fire.
