According to an article written on the Webmd weight loss column fresh vegetables are as healthy, if not healthier than fresh vegetables. WOW can this be true? Here's a clip - "Nutritionally speaking, frozen veggies are similar to -- and sometimes better than -- fresh ones. This makes sense, considering that these veggies are usually flash-frozen (which suspends their "aging" and nutrient losses) immediately after being harvested. Frozen veggies were often picked in the peak of their season, too. I ran a nutritional comparison on both fresh and frozen broccoli florets (uncooked), and the frozen broccoli contained a bit more vitamin A, vitamin B2, vitamin C, and folic acid. A recent government study found no change in amounts of folic acid found in veggies after 12 months of freezing. So don't let nutrition stop you from buying frozen!" The entire article can be found here http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/frozen-vegetables-are-hot I have always thought that frozen vegetables taste way better than canned vegetables. Thanks to this article, I believe they are as healthy as fresh ones. Maybe that's why I prefer frozen vegetables over canned. How about you? Do you prefer them frozen or canned?

Kinda like green peas only oblong and harder. Kind of like a cross between black eyed peas and green peas. I use them to make a Spanish style rice. I learned to make this from a Puerto Rican lady, "Arroz con Gondules" = Rice and pigeon peas. It's really good.

Canned green beans are the only vegetables I buy canned other than tomatoes. I prefer fresh, but I will pick frozen over canned on everything else.

I am glad to hear that. I always buy frozen veggies and fruits alot of the time. The taste is so much better, and I buy the ones with reasonable prices. The frozen spinach is always reasonable and its one of our favorites. We got used to frozen and the cans dont taste so good now.

Hi kathy, Yes, I love frozen veggies! I have always loved them! I don't go to the grocery store too often so I like to have frozen veggies in the freezer. It is alot easier that way. I think they taste just as good if they are frozen then if they are fresh. When they are cooked I don't think you can taste the difference. I am not big on canned veggies. The only thing I eat canned is corn and once in awhile I will use the canned round potatoes that I will throw in a pot roast or a stew. Other than that I will use frozen. Oh, but I do like fresh carrotts when I am cooking for some reason. Although, I do buy them frozen too! I just won't eat carrotts in a can!

I use some canned things to cook with too. Mostly tomatoes, beans like kidneys or cannelloni or sometimes potatoes. My husband was used to eating canned until he met me, then it was always frozen. He really dislikes canned now and eats most veges.

Growing up in a farming family, we always used to can food. I gave that up when my kids were little because I had read that more nutrition is lost in the canning process than with those frozen. (That was much discussed topic even way back in the '70's.) I have a huge chest freezer and freeze the veggies and fruits, etc. I haven't purchased canned veggies in probably 30+ years, I like the taste, texture, and the color of the flash frozen better. What I don't grow in my garden to freeze, I buy the frozen varieties of them.

I had used canned veggies for as long as I can remember. About 4 months ago I started cooking for two instead of three and one can seemed to be too much so I started buying frozen veggies. It has worked out great not only do I only cook what I need but it seems to be cheaper too. The can veggies at my local grocery store are 47 cents a can (generic) I have been buying the dollar bag of veggies and get a little more then three times the amount. I keep a tupperware in my freezer for all the left over veggies and come winter time I have a variety of veggies for soups.

Definitely frozen -- canned are nasty and high in sodium. I prefer frozen but will take fresh over frozen any day of the week.

Hmm... I usually get my vegetables fresh from the market. I have rarely relied on frozen vegetable in my cooking. Even canned vege are rarely seen in my kitchen. Never like the mushy texture of them vegetables in a can. If I want them mushy, I cook them a little longer. Taste much better than the can ones too! But the article you provided is a good read. You mentioned that you ran a nutritional comparison. Where did you get the information for your comparison from?

I love frozen veggies. I like the new steam veggies you can easily microwave for 5 minutes . I like both, fresh and frozen but the life of frozen veggies appeal to me more because sooo many times I have to quickly eat the fresh veggies so they don't go bad and with the frozen veggies I can heat and serve anytime. This news about frozen veggies being just as healthy or maybe healthier then fresh veggies is good news, but I have always suspected that frozen veggies were good for you because a lot of them are crunchy and taste fresh after heating them up, similar to heating up fresh veggies. Now can veggies don't even taste the same as fresh or frozen and I try avoid can veggies as much as possible.

I pretty much always use frozen veggies because they're rather cheap, and taste far better than canned veggies. The only canned veggies I use are spinach and yams because I'm not sure how to prepare them fresh, lol. Carrots and celery I will use fresh. Corn, peas, green beans, and broccoli I buy from a whole sale club in 5 lb bags frozen. Then I steam them in the microwave.

Steaming is best. Spinach you can steam just like other veges or stir fry, after it's thawed, with onions and seasonings, yummy.

Frozen is definitely better than canned because canned good have a lot of preservatives and sodium which is bad for us. Sodium can cause water retention which is bad news for dieters like myself. Frozen food isn't just as fresh as the fresh kind, but I don't see why it isn't hard to believe that it's as healthy. I don't like all frozen vegetables though, I only like the corn and peas. The frozen carots I don't like at all. :(

I've never really bother with canned foods in general and especially not vegetables...they are usually way overcooked and then get cooked up even more so a lot of the nutritious value is eliminated, also most canned veggies are loaded with salt. As far as fresh, hardly ever buy them either as fresh produce can sit for days and days in the warehouses after being picked, then shipped, then sit on the produce shelf for long periods of time until bought...so I always opt for frozen which in a way is fresher.

hi redkathy I also read that and as I have been using a lot of frozen veggies I felt good about myself, and I never use canned veggies as they usually dont taste all that' great specially canned potatoes. they have an odd off flavor I just do not like. I like them either frozen or fresh from the produced aisle. here in southern ca we do get a lot'of local farm produce from a big farm called Irvine farms, and they are really go good. I do like and use frozen veggies a lot.

I think frozen vegetables are the best, then fresh and last the canned. The only canned vegies taht are better are tomatoes. With frozen vegies, I will not get chopped, you can't tell how much is the listed chopped vegie and how much is weed or insect. Ilike to determine my own meat thank you.
