An exchange student would perhaps stays in the host country for a relatively short period of time, often 6 to 10 months or longest being a year. However, study abroad or international students would probably stay in the country for several years.

That's right. An exchange programs for students are usually done by the universities or college from different countries who has a good relationship each other. They usually exchange one of the best students to be able to learn in another place. I know this because one of my friend get the offer of the exchange program. And for studying abroad, means you are a student from one country studying in another country, and you start and finish your study there.
