Whoo hoo! It rained here today! 1st time I have seen rain in over 8 months!

Rain here in Caior is very rare and only seems to be around during the winter months. But I headed outside to go shopping today and lo and behold it was raining! On the way back form the shopping centre in the taxi another car drove past through a puddle and I was absolutely coverd in muddy water because the front window was open. But I didn't care one bit! All around me were puddles, the air seems clearer and even the roads seem cleaner! It is amazing how much you can come to appreciate something so simple when you don't get to see it so much anymore! I haven't really given anything to respond to here yet as all I wished to do was share my joy! Maybe the question is what do you not see so much anymore that you used to take for granted and now wish you hadn't?

lol...I know exactly what you mean. Having lived most of my life in Kuwait, I sometimes had to wait years for a little rain!! I remember seeing a rainbow just once in Kuwait..and I was so excited, I remember calling up everyone I knew. But here in Bangalore, I see it atleast a couple of times in a year. hmmm...coming to your question.....the clean air and greenery of Kerala is what I miss. I remember when I was younger and the paddy fields around harvest time...breezy afternoons spent walking around the paddy fields. I would also enjoy the harvesting activities by the villagers and would join in (when allowed to). No more paddy fields anymore and more houses have come up in the area:(

lol....I didn't realize...it's down there... you being up so early has goe me and mimpi all dizzy and our brains seems to have gone for a toss...lol Bangalore..might be greener than Mumbai (I haven't seen much of Mumbai except for the airport) but for a city which is known as the 'Garden City', it really isn't even green anymore.

I don't think I have seen a rainbow here yet but I am sure I too would get pretty excited if I did! I miss greenery as well. Where I live in Aistralia is a coastal town with a mountain nearby, so there is a lot of rainforest, bush and beaches etc. As per usual though, urban sprawl is starting to make a dent in all of this just like you have said is happening in Kerala. It seems we are needing to go further and further out these days just to see what always used to be within arm's reach. Thanks for the response.

Muddy water drenched James. Did you dance in the rain as well ? . It does bring about that element of surprise does it not ? Hope it rains there again for you my friend. If nothing else it's great to know that it brought out those feelings of joy and happiness within you.

In Bangalore, going further out doesn't help either. I stay on the outskirts and all the greenery I used to see 5 years back is no more. It's all concret now.

I did find Bangalore far greener overall than Mumbai though. Mumbai has so much concrete it's not funny! I wish they had of had more parks and trees like they do in Delhi.

No dancing yet alok as I was still in shock at seeing it rain in the first place! I just realized something too..... Rain means puddles, puddles mean mosquitoes..... You know what this has opened up for me don't you? Mosquito cricket! I hope ti continues to rain a bit more too as it gives this overall feeling of freshness and cleanliness that isn't present a lot of the time because of the heat and the dust. Thanks for the response and I hope you have an enjoyable weekend.

I can understand how you felt Jams. I was born and brought up in Hatton Sri Lanka where you get the perennial rains throughout the year. We have migrated to India our mother land several years back. Here it shines 12 months in the city I live .It is supposed to be a rainy season for two months from October to November. If the monsoon is good I am the happiest person enjoying every drop of it reminiscing my child hood days. Rain, it is the nectar from the heavens.

It makes me immensely happy that you have been to that Emerald island and was able to see and experience of my childhood days.Green is the word.It is always the lush green and the smell of the vegetation. It has all the qualities of becoming the number one tourist destination in hate world. The attitude of the People ,hospitality, paces to see and the serene beaches. It is indeed a pity that it is torn by this ethnic civil war.But it is a miracle that it has not lost it's charm.

Yes it is a shame about the turmoil because it is an absolute slice of paradise and so, so different to mainland India. Greqat beaches, beautiful scenery, wonderful fresh food and the people are very friendly as well. I immensely enjoyed both of my visits there even though it was only for business.

I have been to Sri Lanka a couple of times now and loved it. I have also been there for a few days during the rainy season and it was so green at that time and the air was almost thick with the smell of rain and vegetation! When I lived in Mumbai the few months of rain were most welcome and I agree that it is nectar from the heavens. It cleared all the dust, cleaned the air and cooled down the weather. It was my favourite time of the year for sure. Thanks for the response balasri.

Hello, James! I am glad that it finally started raining in there! It must be really bad to say so long without seeing the rain... Sometimes, it is great to feel the air clean while it is raining. The air gets wet and you can breath better. Isn't it like that? I can't think of anything that could answer your question... I'm usually not granted for some things that I would miss if I stop seeing around. But I cannot remember of anything that I took for granted and now I miss. Respectfully, Munhozmib.

Hi munhozmib. Yes it can become quite strange to go so long wothout rain as it is certainly not a scenario I am used to in my home country! Given that you can;t come up with anything that you take for granted must mean you live a life full of gratitude! Great attitude to have. Thanks for the response.

It rained here to today in Thailand, and yesterday. It is coming towards the end of our rainy season or 'green season' as the tourist authority like to call it! I actually don't mind the rain here compared to that of the UK. UK rain tends to be drizzle a lot of the time, at least here it is still warm and you get proper heavy rain that is much more dramatic, I love it when the thunder and lightning comes too.

Lucky for you alphason! I love the rain in the more temperate climates because there is so much greenery around and it helps cool the air. The smell of the rain is also fantastic! Many people get quite frightened when there is thunder and lightning but I too like to listen to it and watch it from inside. I like the term "Green Season" instead of rainy season too. Thanks for the response.

My journey to Egypt is a long one dolcias! I am Australian and have lived there most of my life but am also British; was in Asia for a year and a half based from mainly the Philiipines, then lived and worked in India for a year; and have now been in Cairo for a year as well. I am expecting to move to the USA within the next few months now so it's always ongoing! lol. This is my second winter here and I am not looking forward to the cold to be honest; but the rain is welcome! I do prefer the hotter weather but I miss the rain when it goes so long without any. I don't know Tanta either I'm sorry but I will look it up in a minute. There was a brief rain shower today but it didn't last very long and it was only the Friday last week that it rained here. Thanks for the response, I haven't come across many people from Egypt here on mylot and I am surprised I didn't acknowledge this about you when we have interacted before!

I have just been looking at maps showing where Tanta is so it's cyrstal clear now thanks dolcias. I am expecting to go to Alexandria soon actually so I guess I will pass Tanta on the way then! I have definitely noticed the lack of English here which is fair enough but it does make things a little hard for me sometimes. I have tried to pick up Arabic but I only know a few words here and there.

oh i am guessing it's because most Egyptians on the internet don't speak English, that's why there aren't many here on mylot....i am sure you have also experienced the language barrier in person for a year now?...by the way Tanta is between Cairo and Alexandria.

I do not think I would be able to go 8 months without rain. I am pretty sure I would shrivel up and die. It is raining here right now, and probably will be for a couple of days. The timing is not all that great because my sister is coming this weekend and we were going to drink Sangria around a bonfire. I don't really mind because I love it so much, especially now after hearing that you have not seen any in soooo long I appreciate it even more! The cars are whooshing by on the wet road and when I go to bed the sound of it pattering on the tin roof will sing me to sleep.

Jeez zigzagbuddha. A simple request to have a few sangria's on my behalf and now I have to wait? Aside from that though the rest of the weekend sounds pretty good to me! It seems that your Sister visits regularly and you always appear to enjoy the time they are there so lucky for you! I haven't seen my Sister for close to two years now unfortunately. Go and stack some wood somewhere dry for next time so you can burn some stuff. Getting wasted on sangria and cabernet and then destroying some unwanted furniture or something sounds like something I could get into myself! lol.

We did not do the bonfire because it rained steadily for a day or 2 and the pile was too wet. But we had a wonderful time anyway! The weather cooperated splendidly Saturday and Sunday so we spent most of our time outdoors, eating and drinking and laughing and shouting. I did not drink any Sangria on your behalf, I was very selfish and only drank it for myself. But I still have a half jug of it and I will make it a point to have a glass or 2 for you! Not until tomorrow though... tonight I will be going to bed very early in the hope that I will awaken tomorrow morning (after 15 hours of sleep) fully recovered.

Sorry to make you wait so long James, but you will have to wait a little longer as I am still recovering. Funny thing is, we actually contemplated taking an ax to an old couch in the living room and setting fire to it right there! See?! You practice your psychic ability without even realizing it!!

James That is wonderful news. I cannot imagine going months without any rain at all, although I do sometimes wish for it to happen. Here in the UK we seem to receive more rain that we are really entitled to. However, it certainly adds to the verdant and lush greenery that we see around us. I hope that you have a little more before the year is out. P1ke

Thanks P1kef1sh! I was actually in London a few months back and it rained while I was there too. I absolutely loved it and was walking for hours in it all around Hyde Park and SoHo etc. That has been my only time in the rain for a very long time and I do miss it. It is just so dry here in Egypt most months of the year and I am from Australia so not used to this at all. There will definitely be an increase in rain now that winter is approaching so I will be making the most of it while I can! It's just a shame that it will also be so cold because I am not a fan of the cold at all. Thanks for responding.

Hi there James ! It also rained here, but i would have preferred it not to because rain is common here. The one thing that i used to take as granted when i was a kid and now it doesn't even appear each year and makes me sad is... snow. I used to build whole tunnels in it when i was a kid, and now if i see a few flocks of snow in the winter, that's a good thing.

I did enjoy it sharie and I hope there is more to come sooner rather than later. Even getting hit in the face with the muddy water when a car drove past was acceptable seeing as there has been so little rain for so long! lol. You really start to appreciate things like this when it is not so common anymore. Thanks for the response and have a great weekend.

your most welcome! we do all need water as for the plants also and animals, but sometimes it's hard if we experience it too heavy like a typhoon or a hurricane...maybe a light fall of water would be okay...as long as it doesnt harm anybody, like those people who losses their shelter... have a great weekend too!

That is good news, if your country needs it. It has not stopped raining here in Belfast from february. All the plants are rottening and it is just miserable. We had no summer, severe floods (we do not get much floods) freak weather. I am glad it is raining, seen it has not rained for so long in Caior. Pray it stops here, or I am emigrating to Caior. I miss the sun. I forget what it looks like. Yes we do take forgranted everyday beautiful things around us. Sometimes we need to be reminded of it.

Belfast! I can imagine that it must be about to get much, much colder for you then as winter creeps in further. If you are a person that loves the sun then Cairo is definitely a good place for you to visit! I am actually from Australia and we have a great deal of sun there also; just far more rain as well compared to here! I can guarantee you though that after a few weeks of Egypt sun you will be longing for Belfast rain again before you know it. I could not agree more that we need reminders sometimes of what we have because we do tend to not miss things until such time as they are infrequent or gone. Thanks for the response hildas.
