I'd like to hear from anyone who has Retinitis Pigmentosa. My husband is 37 years old and was diagnosed with the disease about 10 years ago. The disease is genetic but no one in his family has ever had it. So far, none of our children have it. (Knock on wood). I would just like to hear your experiences and how you are treating it. Maybe, we can get some ideas from one another.

I personally have retinitis pigmentosa, I was diagnosed in early adulthood (around 19), and have progressed slowly, I am now 28, the good news is that most research states that while genetic it is primarily carried by the mother and effects only male offspring, so if your husband is the only carrier your children should remain problem free. The bad news is that while this disorder can be slowed it cannot be reversed but few people end up without any vision. I manage well with transitioning sunglasses, it helps buffer the time it takes for my eyes to adjust to changes in light, I have also attended seminars to learn as much as possible to navigate and perform daily activities with minimal disruption. while i can still legally drive it has become troublesome and i prefer to walk or ride a bike so i can hear and take more time to gather information about my surroundings. I think it is wonderful that you are so concerned. My wife has been essential in adapting to my changing vision, she helps me without coddling or patronizing me. you may want to look into navigation methods that work for your husband, or look into screen reading software for the computer, I would be lost without mine ! I attend college for my second degree and utilize screen reading software to access pdf copies of my textbooks, and a voice recorder instead of taking notes. I hope your husband is adapting well, and that we can talk in the future. with some luck and proper precautions, vitamins and sunglasses, maybe he won't get to where he has to change that much, I was fool hearty and waited to long to address it and now I'm very near to being legally blind. good luck and hope i helped !!
