Should Schools Switch to Year-Around Schedule?

A North Carolina school is dealing with the same controversy many school districts across the nation are facing. The issue is whether to permanently change the school to a year-around schedule. Since it made the change, attendance is down. The school says a year-around schedule is also costing tax-payers more. Should schools switch to a year-around schedule, or keep the normal schedule? (Don't only take this question from a Tax-Payers standpoint but also from a Students)

There are really some schools that are year-round. They only have a week or two semestral breaks but not the long summer break that we used to know. It's only good for higher schools or college but not for the elementary levels.

I don't know that I agree that it isn't ok for elementary schools- I think it is all in how the parents sell the idea to their children. And I have read studies that say a long break during the summer can be directly related to the need to spend all the time in the beginning of the next year reviewing the previous years works, actually re- teaching it altogether. Truthfully there are pros and cons to both sides of the argument- but if schools start heading in that direction- parents need to offer up some support. Thanks

I think a switch is fine if the school is truly ready to make it. Often these set-ups allow for a few weeks off every few months. I think that while it may be hard on students at first that it allows them to more fully transition into real life- the way it really works. It the real world unless you are a teacher there is no such thing as 3 months off. As for the tax payer part- while I don't necessarily like the idea of my taxes going up- I want what's best for my children and all children. If this works out best for the students- I say go for it. As a parent I would and will do what it takes to prepare my children for their future and if that includes year round school- then lets do it. Good luck to you.

That would be horrible to switch school from having off in the summer to having it all year around- granted you would probably have the same time off, you would just have more breaks between the year probably. Though there is something very great about being able to have the whole season of summer to a student's self, a time to learn and grow from experiencing those summer days that are spoken so much about. Kids need to have (or it is more so nice to let them have) a gap of time off from the regular routine, after their education they will have a career where they have to work more and ask for their days off, it's not as easy, kids should be able to live in a less stressful environment sometime in their life, not just from day one to year five. I am glad I am a senior in high school and don't have to worry about them taking away my summer, I will be gone before they get to enact that haha. Happy mylotting and have a great day or night!
