Using an external hard drive

I recently bought an external hard drive for my laptop, since I only have a 30g hard drive installed. My question is, how do you go about using programs from the external hard drive? Mine keeps telling me that it doesn't have the proper setup to support the installed programs when I try to run them. Do I need to install an OS on it? I want to run my MS Office from it, as well as my Sims 2 game. Any suggestions? I have a WD 320g external drive.

what I would do is store your data on the external hard drive, and use your main computer hard drive for the installed programs it would be easier.

Hey, Well when you install a program, it should ask you the location you want to install it. Instead of it being Drive C:, change it to where ever the harddrive is located.
