Do conferences and meetings solve problems?

I find that some people are fond of having conferences and meetings at the drop of a hat. If they have some points to pass on to their subordinates, they order a meeting, they want answers to a question, they order a meeting. Often teh subordinates are located in different cities and at times across the country at great distances. They waste two to three days to come and attend the meeting or conference at great cost and when the event is over, they are none the wiser. The same points coudl have been passed in the from of a letter or a email or comments coudl ahve been obtained in writing on teh burning issue and then compiled at not even 1/100th the cost. What is the real purpose of meetings and conferences?

you know maybe im wrong but i always find it sad when companies have to have meetings all the time because it makes me think that the head people dont know how to decide on ANYTHING!! and just want everyone together to agree on what they already want to do so if it fails they dont get blamed.. but that could just be me being silly..

I believe that some conferences encourage problem solving and others are purely learning purposes. Like for example a certain health issues are being addressed by different medical practitioners all over the world, and by sharing experiences, these health professionals atleast have an idea how to attach the issues.
