free registry fix programs

I'm not sure but, in hopes that I've gotten rid of the Smitfraud-c now. I always had this color like wheel at top and it just disappeared...It would always have a box pop up saying I had like 700 viruse's etc. I think that is what gave me the Smit?? Are the free registry fix programs the ones that when u download give u malware??? Many Thanks Dixi
