Is there such a thing as a free lunch?

I cannot help but to questions these types of things because I am a seeker of answers to the never ending questions. When I was growing up because of our income my brothers and I qualified for the free lunch program. And with this we also qualified for waivers on school book fees and student fees. But the thing is it is not truly free. I realized this when I began working and scanned over my first paycheck and noticed the withholdings section where it says "school taxes". Now I did not have children and honestly I did not mind paying this because I know it is funding and feeding children (like me) who might not otherwise have had a chance to learn.
But with this current election topic of Universal Healthcare (UHC) I cannot but question the possible ramifications this can not only bring to businesses, people's households, and people's health if and when their family business is shut down due to not being able to provide healthcare. How is it we can truly trust a system who currently makes decisions on government run programs (which by majority we question and complain about) to provide us with efficient basic health services? Right now you and I with or without health insurance can go to our local Health Departments and either pay out of pockets or sign up for various types of assistance depending upon our income circumstances. Not to mention the free clinics we already have available. Yes we have to ask around, but they are there.
Also, we have pharmaceutical companies that offer assistance to people who cannot afford insurance as well as the $4 copay for generic meds. Then there is St Jude hospital that is a non profit organization that helps terminally ill children at no cost to them and their families. Among others.
Now there are a vast majority of US citizens who fall between the cracks of qualifying for assistance and/or medical coverage. Healthcare is a very important issue to me as it is for everyone.
So instead of creating a new program in the healthcare arena why don't we insist on our elected officials of repairing the one we currently have. And I have to put my 2 cents here....I think it is inaccurate when you file for any type of assistance that the powers that be go by your gross income and not actually your take home- which is what you actually have to pay and live upon.
But back to the subject deep within the folds of questions that never end....Just like with the free lunch program....
Is there such a thing as free healthcare?

No and yea right! But, let me make the point, just because somebody is making a lot of money it doesn't mean that somebody else isn't getting any. The USA is a free nation where you can do anything you want in order to succeed, if you do it in a way that gives you illgotten gains then you'll pay for those choices. If you pay for something you're getting what you pay for, if it costs a little more then its probably worth it, if its given then appreciate. If its taken from somebody and given away then its useless.

Healthcare comes at a great cost to people, just like when you see school taxes, you would see health taxes.Places that have health taxes say they work many hours per week just to pay for public health insurance. So, no free healthcare, not for real. Take care

I think that the idea of medical care being completely controlled by the government is crazy. Sory for those that agree with it, but I do not. I think it is better to have a choice.
I think we all pay enough in taxes as it is, and yes, may of us are unable to afford health insurance, and many of us are on a medical assistance program. Most of us still pay taxes to help fund these programs, as you pointed out with the school tax. I agree with you that when we apply for the assistance, it should be based on the income we actually take home, not the gross amount as it is. I don't feel that there is much wrong with our current healthcare, aside from the astronomical costs of care and insurance. Those are the areas that need worked on. You are right, no new program should be created, the ones in place just need modified a bit.
