Dogs for entertainment or for security?

What do you consider in owning a dog, is it for company and entertainment or for your family's security? When I and my wife visited a pet shop, we argued on what type of dog we need to buy. I my self want a dog for security purposes and it should be big, alert and strong, my wife wants the small one with a lot of furs that she can hug and play with . Since our money was just enough to buy one, so we went home with nothing but an arguement. Though we did not have a fight for a small things like that, I felt guilty of not giving attention for her likes. So I decided to just buy the small dog the next day, which I did, and my wife was very happy she hugged and kissed me the way she never did before...LOL.... So how do you choose your pet, is women realy picks the small pet for them?

Very smart choice. Small dogs are easier to handle and they live longer. Big dogs need a lots of attentions and running to stay healthy. Security is always under question. Small dogs are barking very loud, so they can alert you for possible danger. I have two small dogs and I am very happy with.

omar, I agree totally with polachicago. My rotti requires as much love and affection as my 3 min-pins do. My rotwieller is 160 pounds and the min-pins weight 9, 10, and 15 pounds. They all want and require love, attention, and room to roam. They all need exercise and plenty of love and attention.

When choosing your dog it is important to know what your expectations are. Although small dogs can be cute and made for many hugs, they can also make very good watch dogs as well. I know mine is. In my opinion, to have a dog for security, we have a choice. Either guard dog or watch dog. In order to have a well behaved guard dog, this will take diligent and careful training, unlike that of training dog that are chosen for companions, re:Entertainment apposed to security. I enjoy my small dog for companionship. In the meantime, I also got myself a very keen watch dog. Although she is small, weighing in at only 5lbs, she does like to think that she can protect me. Overall, I think it comes down to personal circumstance. There was a point in our lives where we needed a dog for personal security reasons, therefore we chose a big, strong and smart dog. I believe that when most people go to choose a dog as a family pet, they are not thinking of the domestic animal as a source of security, be it personal or for the house, yard, shop etc. Depending on the breed of small dog that you have decided to purchase, do not under estimate it's ability to work for you. It may not be able to take down a 180lb person but it may be able to alert you to possible prowlers. All dogs are very smart. They can tell you who are good people and who are those that may be questionable too.

I agree to that EvrWonder! I only wanted a big dog, to keep those unscrupulous individuals out of my household and in my family as well, since I work late at night. Although the dog I bought was small, well he always barks and everytime I went home and just in our house gate, I can hear his bark and my wife wakes up faster than before, to get the door for me. Thanks, LOL...and Take Care

It's not the size of the dog in a fight but the size of the fight in a dog, many a small dog seen off a bigun. In security alertness and the sound of the bark may be more important than size So perhaps you don't need a big dog but I don't think your wife needs a small one, dogs of many sizes are cute and affectionate. Personally, I have two Border Collies, highly intelligent, agile, natural athletes, tireless, very affectionate, friendly and loyal and very alert. Though not large by any means it would be a brave man indeed that would tackle a Collie guarding it's property. If you have ever seen a Collie, with a strong eye, stare at you, you will understand what I mean. all the best urban

I have'nt known a dog like dog, perhaps you can provide some picture of it, and let me inform. I love dogs, but those that are high breed, but too expensive and high in financial maintenance, specialy when they're young. I'm not the kind of person who can but what I want, it takes me some time to have them. Anyway thanks for your contribution, I'll wait for your dog's picture. Take Care....LOL

We have a medium sized dog that think she's here to guard the house and has chased at least one person out of the yard - granted, it was the cable guy, but still.

I personnaly like big dogs because their tough. I like big tough animals, I guess you could say I'd like a dog to protect me. I used to have a chihuahua, obviously not big, becasuse she found me and loved me so I felt obligated to care for her. I would take in all stray animals if I could regardless of size though.

We have 3 large dogs. They are for all the things you mentioned. They are great for security, companionship and cuddling. They hug, they play and they are very protective of us. We have three so that they don't get lonely. They are oldeer dogs, here is the break down: Holly - lab/chow - 9 years old - about 40 lbs Ben - chocolate lab - 8 years old - about 70 lbs Olivia - Bull Mastiff - 6 years old - about 100 lbs I know the names are funny, this is what happens when kids name them! The ages and weights are estimates. They are all rescue dogs and I wouldn't trade a one for anything!

I see that you love your dogs so much. I really wanted to have great big dogs, but they're too expensive and needs a lot of attention when it comes to health when they're young, and financialy I can't handle it. But if I will be given a chance to have a big dog for free even if it's still a puppy, then I will never refuse that offer. Take Care..LOL

I have two miniature poodles because I love animals and I wanted some company. When I was a child my family had cats and it wasn't until I was 16 years old that I found out I was allergic to their fur. I am allergic to any dog that molts so I am fine with a non-molting type of dog like the poodle. I have their coats done in a pet clip and they look like ordinary dogs. I got Secret in 2004 and Magic in 2004. They are not guard dogs but Secret has quite a bark. Secret is unusual white with black patches and Magic looks lovely next to him because she black. I had to save up more money before buying Magic, buying one dog is enough money. My dogs are medium sized and can walk a long way which is fantastic.

Depending on where one is staying, and there are differnet needs for dogs ^_^ If it's a private apartment, very naturally most ple will need dogs for security.. BUt other than that, i think most ple will prefer cute little toy dogs for entertainment, to play with ^_^ hehe PLus, small cute dogs, their barking is not as annoying as the big dogs, which tend to drag their barks.. haha ^_^ Even guys will choose small dogs for themselves, just like my fren.. haha

People have different taste or likes specialy when it comes to choosing for a house pet. Even men as you have said will choose a small one, it depends upon what they feel will suit their lives. Also, you're right, why owning a big dog if you you're self cannot have a space in your own home...Great Thanks..Take Care...

Do you have any kids? If not, maybe that's the reason why your wife wants to have a cute and furry one. Most of the women wants to own a dog which she can consider her stuff toy or toy dog. But not all women want to have a toy dog. Personally, I want to raise a Cyberian Husky or a Golden Retriever. But also I still consider owning a Shitzu or some toy dog.

Women always pick the small dog because they're cute and it's in the womans nature. Truthfully i would get a medium sized dog, like a 50lb or 60lb dog that still gives off a good bark but is still a good cuddler for the wife. I have a 60lb boxer that actually my wife picked out and brought home. He's been the most awesome dog ever because they have such a great personality. He gets worked up because they are naturally hyper but he's such a snuggler when it's cold or windy it's hilarious. It's not too huge but is a decent size dog that if someone were to come to the house they would definately not enter because they'd see his head in the window barking away. As for a little dog, well a burgler will just kick it and break every bone in the dogs body. That's great protection huh.

I pity those security dogs, though they were trained to guard, but they were kept in the cage and locked till their masters or care takers let them out. So never I do that with mine, I'll keep them inside my house and treat them as famly. Take Care ...LOL thanks for your response.

Dogs are mens best friend for sure, they're loyalty is unremarkable and most of them are talented. like last night, my wife told me that a piece of meat was dropped in the floor and our dog did nothing, just look at my wife. My wife took the piece of the meat out of the floor and put it to sheen's (the name of the dog) plate, that's the only time sheen ate it. I think this dog is well disciplined by its breeder....LOL Take Care

Hello! I do not pick my pets for security nor anything. I do it for the entertainment. A pet needs love and care, instead of being chained all the time. They also give you a lot of trouble, so you must be willing to spend a lot of your time with them. You know, they get sick just like we do. They need affection just like we do. It is not only throwing them somewhere and letting them survive, hehe. That's why I pick dogs for entertainment. The security comes together, but the main reason is the love. Congratulations on your new family member! Respectfully, Munhozmib.

First, thank you so much, I was not thinking of owning a dog purely for security, ofcurse I have feelings and keeping my dog outside with chain is not me. I want big dogs for companion, entertainment, a pet to love and take care of, and as you said security comes together with it. I like people who treat their pet as member of their family, it's a humane act toward animals. Take care and thanks for your contribution..LOL

I think a dog must satisfy both duties. That is, a loyal dog must entertain the family and provide company and also be able to ensure the security of the family.

Domestic dogs are like that, they can withstand diseases, and they're the one who lokk for a cure. But they can't be trusteed for security, since this domestic dogs ate anything that for them smells food. I realy like big dogs, both for company and for security...but I love my wife, so she gets first what she wants and i'll get mine soon I hope so.....thanks and take care..LOL

I have got 4 dogs. One is for the purpose of guarding the house. He is a shepherd/husky cross (a big dog), and he sure does protect us (but he is also a sweet dog). The next is a heeler (a medium dog), he is my husbands dog. The dog follows him around alot. Then there is my two little papillons. They are here just to be a companion for me. I find that alot of women do prefer having a companion over a guard dog. But I would not give up my guard dog for anything.

It's true most women prefer dogs for companion. Like my wife, she's very fond of small dogs, she do'nt like cats or birds, cause for her dogs understand her feelings. I like dogs very much, and I want the bigger one that can protect me incase of danger gets near. Thanks..LOL and Take Care.

As for me, I choose dogs by their aesthetic quality and brute strength. I like the ones that are energetic and strong as I get to exercise as well when I take them for a walk. Security and keeping me company are both prime considerations, as I always make it a point to spend time with my dog and make her/him feel that he/she is part of the family and not just some security guard. I'm not so fond of small, cute toy dogs. I always find them to be too much of an attention-grabber and noisy.
