Do you take care of your own car maintenance? I don't since I don't have even the basic idea how to change an oil or do other basic things in a car. The only thing I know to do is to change a punctured tyre. Do you take your care to a mechanic for a service or you do it yourself? © ronaldinu 2008

Yes, I do all my own maintenance and have done since I first owned a car. I was lucky because my father own a car repair shop and I spent my childhood watching the mechanics and playing around with odds bits of engine they would give me to take apart and put back together again. I do however take my car to a garage if there is a major job to do, because these days, specialist tools are needed for so much stuff. But I find out if there is something wrong when I am servicing the car. I change oil, check brakes and suspension, so I get to know exactly what jobs need doing. I also own a Haynes workshop manual for whatever car I own a the time.

I don't own a car but I do help my mom when we are out driving when something needs added. My mom herself takes the car to the shop to have oil or transmission fluid added. And to have oil changed and the brakes checked.

I want to take care of my own car maintenance but I am just like you. I don't know anything about a car and I don't even know how to change a punctured tyre. If anything happened to me while I am driving alone, I think I would just call the mechanics or call my husband for help if he can come or not working at the moment. I am worried to since i don't know a thing about car. At many times I am cheated by the mechanics. They asked me to change almost everything from my car because they claimed that it would be dangerous if I still use the old ones. But luckily I went for my car check with my husband and he told me the mechanics are just doing it to get my money. They earn commissions from each spare parts sold on behalf of their name.

I would love to be able to tend to my car myself! The amount of money you could save just by doing a few maintenance jobs, even better be able to service it yourself! I did go on a short course once about taking care of your car and it was so damn complex and I only scratched the surface in car maintenance. I have RAC membership if I break down and I take my car in for a service once a year and that costs a lot of money. In all honesty I don't do anything to the car and leave it to the experts who know exactly what they are doing.

I use to. I learned out of necessity. But now I have bad health and I'm not able to work on them any longer or do much else either. I pay someone else to do these things.

Alot of people don't know how to change their own oil, it would be cheaper if you could, instead of having someone else do it, plus buying oil and a filter is alot cheaper. Luckily, I'm married to an auto mechanic, so I don't have to worry about all that stuff, he'll take my car in to where he works and when he gets a chance during the day he'll change it for me real fast, all I have to pay for is the oil and filter which is only about 20 bucks, he don't charge me for labor...lol. I'm not sure if I could change a tire or not, I always thought I could do it, but luckily I haven't had to do that either I try to keep good tires on my car.

I have never done anything when it comes to car maintenance because I do not know the first thing about changing the oil or anything else that comes with doing maintenance on a car,and I do not even know how to change a punctured tire, and for most of the maintenance when me and my fiance drove the Blazer like normal changing of fluids and stuff my dad will do himself or he would take it to a mechanic for big problems, and the same goes with the maintenance of my moms car and his truck.

Hi there ronaldinu I try to do what I can, like I know how to change the tire but don't have the strength to undo the bolts so I have no choice but to call on the neighbour (like I had to last time) or get to the garage or call out the road services!
