What Breed should I get?

I have finally conviced my other half to let me get a dog, and now since we are moving we will have a garden big enough to keep one. But now I dont know what breed to get! My mum has a Golden Retriever which I love, and his temperament is so docile and loveable that I really want a dog with similar traits ( i know this can be achieved by training but breed is also important). However I'd really like to get a small dog like a maltese or pomeranian...does anyone know of the toy dogs which have traits like that?

I am only speaking from experience as I am a dog person and have had many dogs over the years. I presently have a Yorkie, which I find are great one person dogs and not good with children. Even though we got her when my daughter was 4, she does not care for children and has snapped at them. She is also shy and does not like strangers either. Cairn Terriers are the sweetest dogs. They are playful, love attention, get along well with children, and are very smart. Papilions are also sweet, loving little babies and love kids. None of these dogs shed and are perfect for a small home or apartment. Lhasa Apsos are also great dogs, but mine were not raised with children and didn't particularly care for them. They need a lot of brushing and grooming unless you keep thair hair cut very short. The others need occasional brushing and grooming, especially if you keep them short. Maltese are very sweet dogs and love to be babied. They also require a great deal of grooming. I have never had a Pomeranian, but have been told they can be high strung. Don't let the brushing and grooming keep you from one of these great breeds, unless you have very little time. I used to brush my Lhasas every day and it was a great way to bond and spend time with them. They loved it so much that when I got the box I kept my tools in, they would get so excited, and one would even lie down on the floor in anticipation. Good luck! You are in for years of enjoyment!! There is nothing like sharing your life with a dog!!!!

PUGS!!! You will love them...but they can't run much. They get tired more easily. How about a beagle? They are simply adorable too. A terrier?Pit Bull? They are loads to choose from. Why don't you look up the net, and try to research on dog breeds that is suitable for you. I am sure you will find one that is. Good luck~
